Trade Deadline Notes: Lightning, Predators, Bruins

The Tampa Bay Lightning are one of the best teams in the NHL this season and are looking to round out their roster ahead of Monday’s deadline. In fact, it has been rumored that the Bolts might be looking to do more than just add depth, as they’ve been connected to some of the bigger names on the market, such as star defensemen Erik Karlsson and Ryan McDonagh. However, in speaking to GM Steve Yzerman, the Tampa Bay Times’ Joe Smith is not so sure they’re willing to pay the price for players of that caliber at this point in time. Smith indicates that it could be a much quieter deadline for Tampa, as Yzerman is not interested in dealing any of his young roster players, such as Brayden Point and Mikhail Sergachev. “We’re trying to keep this team together with the hope of improving it”, Yzerman said, though he also added that there have been very few “fits” in his trade discussions thus far. Smith suggests that the Lightning could still get their major blue line addition without losing top young talent if they target the Detroit Red Wings’ Mike Green. However, there are few who would argue that Tampa can’t win the Cup this year without making a move and Yzerman seems willing to test that hypothesis is the market doesn’t meet his expectations over these next few days.

  • Another contender that could be somewhat reluctant to make a move are the Nashville Predators. Predators staffer Thomas Willis spoke with GM David Poile today, and the long-time executive sounded less than thrilled about the prices on his trade targets. “Every team we talk to asks for Eeli Tolvanen“, Poile told Willis. Tolvanen, the Preds’ 2017 first-rounder unexpectedly fell in the draft last year and already has teams regretting that, as he has dominated the KHL, World Juniors, and now the Winter Olympics in an epic age-18 campaign. Of course, Tolvanen is untouchable and it was recently reported that he could even join Nashville this season, so Poile is understandably upset by that unreasonable trade request. Poile also said to Willis that he would prefer not to give up the Predators’ first-round pick this year in a trade, unless he absolutely had to. After watching Tolvanen slide right into their hands at #30 last year, no one can blame Poile for being protective of his top pick again, although it could handicap his ability to make a splash at the deadline.
  • After trading Frank Vatrano to the Florida Panthers and announcing that Anders Bjork would be out long-term following shoulder surgery in a matter of hours today, it’s clear that the Boston Bruins will be on the hunt for an addition or two to their forward corps. However, they may be able to do so without even making a trade. Though there has been nothing official as of yet, there is speculation that one of the Olympics’ top scorers, Ryan Donato, could sign with the Bruins in a matter of time. The Hobey Baker candidate is likely to stay with Harvard through the end of their season, WEEI’s Ty Anderson believes, but could then join the team for the playoffs much like Charlie McAvoy did last season. Another option right in their back yard could be old friend Jarome Iginla. Iginla skated again with the Bruins’ AHL affiliate in Providence today and told The Providence Journal’s Mark Divver that the Bruins were one of his preferred destinations for one last run at the Stanley Cup. Iginla added that he’s not sure that an offer will come, but it sound like if one did, he would accept it.

Trade Candidates: Mark Letestu

With the trade deadline just days away, we continue to profile several players that have a good chance to be dealt by February 26th.

Mark Letestu has not had a good season. In fact, in many ways this is the worst season of his NHL career. However, when Trade Deadline season rolls around each year, experienced, versatile depth forwards on expiring contracts are consistently the most common type of player dealt. Letestu fits the bill, hence the rampant speculation that he will be traded. Like Letestu, the Edmonton Oilers have not had the 2017-18 campaign they expected and have no reason to keep Letestu and, based on his play this season, are likely eager to trade him to the highest bidder. This is not a question of if Letestu will be dealt, but when and to whom.

Contract

Letestu is in the final season of a three-year, $5.4MM contract signed with the Oilers in 2015. The deal holds a $1.8MM cap hit and no trade protections.

2017-18

The 32-year-old Letestu is coming off a career-high 35 points in 2016-17. While he may not be an offensive juggernaut, Letestu has been the definition of reliable in his nine-year NHL career. He can play on the power play and penalty kill, excels at the face-off dot, and is hardly ever found taking a bad penalty. In 2017-18, he has continued to dominate the dot and play clean hockey; that’s about all he’s done right. Letestu has seen his offense disappear this season and, with it, his play time. He is currently on pace for 25 points this season, 10 fewer than last year and tied for the second-least of his career. Even worse, most of that production came earlier in the season. Letestu recorded 16 of his 18 points prior to the new year and is currently on a 24-game goal-less streak, with just two assists to show for the last two months. To qualify that lack of impact on the score sheet, consider that Letestu is still averaging more than two minutes per night on the power play as well. Between his significant power play and penalty kill time – despite no offense and a team-worst plus/minus – Letestu is left with under nine minutes a night of five-on-five time this season.

Potential Suitors

Despite a miserable season, there continues to be immense interest in Letestu. That is not to say that the Oilers will receive an immense return when they trade him, but there will be some competition driving up the price for a player that otherwise would be worth very little. Some teams may consider Letestu’s personal struggles a function of Edmonton’s poor season and hope for a bounce back to his 2016-17 level of play with a change of scenery. Others may just see him as a specialist and continue to use him as Edmonton does – power plays, penalty kills, face-offs, and little else.

Among the teams rumored to be interested in Letestu are the Winnipeg Jets, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Toronto Maple Leafs. He would fit well as an energy line or 13th forward on any of those teams. Other squads who could use another body up front include the Los Angeles Kings, Philadelphia Flyers, and Boston Bruins, while several others are sure to do their due diligence on his availability as well. However, as The Athletic’s Aaron Portzline alluded to, the perfect fit for Letestu is likely back with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Letestu spent parts of four seasons in Columbus before signing with Edmonton, including arguably his best season in 2013-14. Not only that, but Portzline points out that Letestu and his family still call Ohio home. While too much stock is often put into familiarity when it comes to transactions and Letestu likely won’t have a say in his destination, the landing spot makes sense for other reasons as well. The Jackets are still fighting hard for a playoff spot and may not be willing to pay for a premium player with their playoff future still uncertain. Letestu will likely be more affordable and, as an added bonus, can jump right into the lineup, rejoining some past teammates and lending his experience to the many younger, newer Jackets forwards. More specifically, Columbus has also struggled greatly with special teams this season, sporting the league’s worst power play and a bottom-five penalty kill. They may have a better chance than anyone at giving Letestu an environment where he can rediscover his even strength game and scoring touch, but even if he doesn’t, he can at least help to rejuvenate the special teams.

Likelihood of a Trade

The likelihood of Letestu being traded is as close to 100% as any player on the block. The Oilers have absolutely no reason to keep him and there is high interest in his services. At some point over the next few days, Letestu will have a new home for the remaining months of the 2017-18 season.

Carey Price Diagnosed With Concussion, Out Indefinitely

The tough year for the Montreal Canadiens continues, as Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports that Carey Price has a concussion and will be out indefinitely. Price was struck in the mask by a shot in a game against the Philadelphia Flyers, but did not undergo the concussion protocol and stayed in the game.

With 23 games remaining in the Canadiens’ season, they’ve now seen Price and Shea Weber—arguably their two best players—ruled out on the same day. Though Price has not been ruled out for the remainder of the year, there does seem to be little incentive for him to get back in the net in a season that is already lost. Montreal sits 27 points behind the Toronto Maple Leafs for third in the Atlantic Division, and 13 points out of a playoff spot in general.

Price’s year overall hasn’t been good, recording just a .904 save percentage while battling injuries all season. Regardless of a return after this concussion, this season will likely go down as one of the worst of his career and one that the Canadiens will hope to never revisit. The 30-year old goaltender starts his eight-year, $84MM extension in 2018-19, and will need to be better and healthier to get this team back to the playoffs.

Rick Nash, Michael Grabner Held Out Of Lineup

As the trade deadline creeps closer and closer, the New York Rangers aren’t willing to risk their prizes in another hockey game. Brett Cyrgalis of the New York Post reports that both Rick Nash and Michael Grabner will not play tonight, which explains the call-up of Vinni Lettieri earlier today.

The Rangers are set to be the star of the deadline with Nash, Grabner and potentially Ryan McDonagh changing teams in the next few days. The club issued a letter to fans earlier this month declaring that a rebuild was on the horizon, and already moved Nick Holden to the Boston Bruins for a third-round pick. The names mentioned above are expected to be worth much more than that when they eventually do move, and an injury could derail those plans.

New York will play in three games before the deadline including tonight, but the team has already basically admitted they’re not going to the playoffs this season. Despite being just six points behind the final wildcard spot, GM Jeff Gorton has already started to plan for next season and beyond. The next few days are incredibly important to those plans.

Anders Bjork Out Six Months Following Surgery

After trading one forward away today, the Boston Bruins announced that they will be without another for the remainder of the season. Anders Bjork will be out for six months following shoulder surgery completed on Tuesday.

The Bruins had high hopes for Bjork coming off a huge season at Notre Dame, but he hasn’t found quite the same impact in his rookie season. With 12 points in 30 games at the NHL level, he’d struggled to find consistency despite obvious talent, and will have to try to take a step forward next season. The 21-year old has a bright future in Boston, but their Stanley Cup run this season will have to be done without him.

Interestingly, the removal of Frank Vatrano and Bjork from the Boston equation does pose some questions about their depth heading into the playoffs. Though the Bruins have been one of the best teams in the entire league this season, they’ve relied heavily on young players without much NHL experience and could look to acquire a more veteran option to plug in for the stretch run. The team does have several forward options waiting in the minor leagues, but there is an obvious opportunity to acquire someone at the deadline to add to the NHL group.

Boston Bruins Trade Frank Vatrano To Florida Panthers

The Boston Bruins have started their trade deadline work early, sending Frank Vatrano to the Florida Panthers in exchange for a 2018 third-round pick. This deal will basically replace the third-round pick sent to the New York Rangers in the previous Nick Holden deal, though it will likely be several spots higher.

Frank VatranoVatrano, 23, had fallen behind several other options in the Bruins pecking order this season, suiting up for just 25 games. His role had been almost completely eliminated, and his production had fallen off along with it. After putting up 10 goals in just 44 games last season, he had registered just two this year to go along with zero assists. In his last game he played just under five minutes, and suffered a lower-body injury that has kept him out since early February.

For Florida, they’re hoping that a change of scenery is enough to spark the elite goal scorer that the minor leagues saw in 2015-16. That year, in his first season of professional hockey, Vatrano scored 36 goals in 36 games for the Providence Bruins to lead the entire AHL despite playing just half a season. That was twice as many as he’d put up for UMass-Amherst the year before, and looks like a bit of a shooting percentage-driven outlier for the young forward. Vatrano shot 19.3% that season in the AHL, a number he hasn’t come close to repeating for Boston.

Still, a third-round pick isn’t a lot to give up for the chance at adding another talented offensive player in Florida. Vatrano is on the final season of his entry-level contract, but won’t have a ton of leverage this offseason to demand a big raise. Though he does have arbitration rights, Florida will likely be able to sign him to a relatively light contract and see if he can find some of that offense for his new club.

By moving Vatrano, Boston has cleared some more cap space for their deadline plans, and can now add players with a full-season cap hit of nearly $2.3MM. Linked to Ryan McDonagh earlier today, the team could still be big players in the next few days as they look to challenge for the Stanley Cup.

Senators, Wolf Pack Complete Minor League Deal

The Hartford Wolf Pack have traded minor league forward Eric Selleck to the Belleville Senators in exchange for future considerations, bringing in the veteran for their remaining games. Sellack is signed to an AHL contract, meaning he wasn’t taking up a contract spot for the New York Rangers this season.

The 30-year old signed his first NHL contract in 2010 when the Florida Panthers inked him to a two-year entry-level deal, and he made his NHL debut during the 2012-13 season. With three NHL games under his belt, Selleck has just three points in 32 contests this year and won’t be relied upon for any offense during the Senators’ stretch run.

Jack Johnson, Columbus Blue Jackets Recently Discussed Extension

There has been a persistent thought that Jack Johnson was likely the first man out the door for the Columbus Blue Jackets at the trade deadline since his trade request became public earlier this season, but now Aaron Portzline of The Athletic (subscription required) reports that the team has reached out to re-open negotiations on a possible extension. Though neither side would comment, it’s an interesting turn in what was an expected breakup over the next few days.

Portzline adds that the Blue Jackets offered Johnson a seven-year extension last offseason worth more than $22MM, which he turned down.

Johnson’s ice time has gone back up since the report of a trade request broke, topping 20 minutes in nine of his last 14 games. As Columbus continues to try and solidify their place in the Stanley Cup playoffs, Johnson’s name has come up as a possibility for many teams around the league. His experience and ability in various situations was quite sought after, with a late first-round pick even expected as a potential return.

Portzline is quick to point out that if extension talks don’t progress, Johnson still could be traded by Monday’s deadline, but this at least opens the door to a possible return. The 31-year old is a valuable piece for the Blue Jackets, but is scheduled to be one of the top defensive options on the open market should he hold out until unrestricted free agency this summer.

Examining Salary Cap Recapture In The Shea Weber Trade

*This story was originally published on June 30th, 2016 just days after the trade occurred. With Weber shut down due to a season-ending foot injury in 2018, it seems relevant to bump it to the top of the site. While the injury is nowhere near career-threatening, it will obviously bring the trade back to the forefront of debate in Montreal. This piece gives additional context to the implications that trade has for both franchises.

One element that was lost in the frenzy that was Wednesday afternoon was the potential salary cap recapture repercussions for Nashville stemming from yesterday’s Shea Weber for P.K. Subban trade.  Despite the fact that Weber is gone, the Predators could still very well be on the hook for a sizable cap hit several years down the road.

The structure of Weber’s contract is now outlawed starting from the 2013 Collective Bargaining Agreement.  The overwhelming majority of his salary is paid out in the first five years of his 14 year deal with four years at just $1MM in salary tacked on at the end.  That was done, of course, to lower the cap hit.

The CBA instituted a cap recapture penalty as a way of penalizing those who, in their view, openly circumvented the salary cap by adding on years with such a low salary that it couldn’t reasonably be expected that the player would actually play out the full contract.  In Weber’s case, he makes $106MM of the salary in the first 10 years of his contract and just a total of $4MM in the final four years combined.

Simply put, the salary cap recapture calculation looks at the sum of the salary paid to the player compared to the cap hit they were charged over the same time period.  Any cap savings over that time become eligible for recapture.

In Nashville’s case, they paid $56MM in salary while accruing a total cap charge of $31,428,572.  The difference – $24,571,428 – becomes eligible for recapture.

Should Weber retire at any point prior to the conclusion of his contract in 2025-26, the Predators would be subsequently be imposed a cap recapture penalty equivalent to that amount divided by the number of years remaining on the contract.  If Weber were to retire with just 1 season left on his deal, they would have to take the entire $24+MM penalty in 2025-26.  If he were to retire with, say, four years remaining though, that total would be divided by 4, resulting in a cap recapture penalty of $6,142,857 in each of those years up until the conclusion of 2025-26.

Suffice it to say, GM David Poile is taking on a big potential risk down the road if Weber does indeed decide to retire before his contract expires.  Had Weber stayed with the Preds longer, eventually the difference between salary and cap charge would have shrunk, lowering their potential exposure to recapture.  But clearly Poile feels the reward is worth it to add Subban to an already dynamic group of defensemen in Nashville.
