Central Notes: Blackhawks, Anderson, Dotchin

Always known for their offensive prowess on the ice, the Chicago Blackhawks have hit hard times. Sure, the team isn’t at the bottom when it comes to team scoring (13th overall), but the usual names aren’t showing up in the box scores, according to Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun-Times.

Patrick Kane broke out of his slump on Wednesday with a pair of goals, but he had been fighting a one goal in 10-game slump. Jonathan Toews has two goals in the past 16 games, while Richard Panik hasn’t scored in 12 games. Nick Schmaltz has one goal in 17 games, while defenseman Duncan Keith hasn’t scored yet this season. Throw in Brandon Saad and Nick Schmaltz, who each have one goal in the last 15 and 17 games, respectively.

“It never gets easy,” said Patrick Sharp, who hasn’t scored in the last 15 games. “You think about it all the time. You feel that pressure in tight games, and in losses, definitely. You leave the rink thinking that you could have helped the team in some way.”

Lazerus writes that despite their offensive struggles, the team has been winning, going 3-1-1 in their past five games, which takes a lot of the pressure off the players. With Kane’s two-goal game, many players hope that signifies that the end of some of these slumps may be forthcoming.

  • James Gordon of The Athletic (subscription required) writes that while many people are blaming the Ottawa Senators for the team’s struggles this year, that’s not where the blame should be pointed. The scribe instead looks at the team’s goaltending, particularly the play of veteran Craig Anderson, who last year put up an impressive season in which he had a 2.28 GAA and a .926 save percentage to lead the team into a deep playoff run. Fast forward to this year and the 36-year-old goaltender has a 2.94 GAA and a .896 save percentage. Backup Mike Condon isn’t faring any better and his analysis suggests that both goalies are just making inexcusable mistakes.
  • Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Jake Dotchin (undisclosed injury) has been placed on injured reserve, according to Tampa Bay Times’ Joe Smith. Smith also says that Dotchin will be eligible to return on Tuesday and might return by then, but he will sit out two games before he is eligible to return. Cory Conacher will take his place on the roster.

As the holiday season approaches, PHR will look at what teams are thankful for as the season nears the quarter point of completion. There also might be a few things your team would like down the road. We take a look at what’s gone well in the first month and what could improve as the season rolls on. Yesterday, we examined the Colorado Avalanche.

What are the New York Islanders most thankful for?

A solid start to the 2017-18 season.

The Islanders, who are doing everything they can to prevent star John Tavares from leaving their team when he becomes an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year, have gotten off to a solid start and look poised to make the playoffs. The team is 12-7-2 coming into Friday and are currently third in the Metropolitan Division and fifth in the Eastern Conference. If they can continue their success, the team should have a solid chance to make the playoffs, something they failed to do last year when they were one of the worst teams in the league at this point a year ago. A second-straight failed playoff appearance wouldn’t look good to a player who should have numerous playoff teams pounding on his door in June.

Who are the New York Islanders most thankful for?

Their offense. The Islanders rank second in the league in goals scored as the team has managed to give a lot of help to Tavares. Linemates Josh Bailey and Anders Lee have thrived around Tavares to form one of the top lines in the NHL. Bailey has five goals and 21 assists so far this year, while Lee has 11 goals and 10 assists. Oh, Tavares is doing just fine as he’s second in the NHL behind Nikita Kucherov with 15 goals. Throw in others like Jordan Eberle (seven goals), Brock Nelson (six goals), and rookie Mathew Barzal (five goals) and offense isn’t really a problem. Even defenseman Nick Leddy is getting into the action. After starting with just two assists in the first nine games, he’s put up five goals and 10 assists in his last 12 games to put himself among the top scoring defensemen in the league.

What would the Islanders be most thankful for?

A long-term commitment from Tavares.

The entire franchise seems to be focused on locking up Tavares who has said he wants to wait before committing long-term to the franchise. While many believe Tavares is waiting to make sure the Islanders find a legitimate home at the Belmont Parks site, there is plenty of confusion and worry about what might happen to the franchise if the team fails to re-sign their star player. To make matters worse, there is no word when a decision might be final on whether the Islanders will find a new home. However, if the team can get that commitment from the veteran, perhaps the team can move forward and focus on other key areas in the future.

What should be on the Islanders Holiday Wish List?

More success from their youth. One thing the team always seems to have a lot of is young talent. While Barzal has five goals, he still has stretches of inconsistency and the team would like to see him develop more. Other players such as Joshua Ho-Sang has been up and down between New York and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers to find more consistency with his entire game. Young defenseman Ryan Pulock, who many felt might be able to supplant Travis Hamonic after he was traded, has struggled to get into games (11 games played, 10 healthy scratches) due to his struggles on defense. Anthony Beauvillier has just two goals in 17 games so far this season. The team must continue to develop their youth if they want long-term success.

Chris Kelly Signs PTO With Ottawa’s AHL Affiliate

NHL veteran Chris Kelly has signed a professional tryout agreement with the Belleville Senators, the Ottawa Senators’ AHL affiliate with the hopes of getting back to the NHL, the team announced Friday.

The 37-year-old center went to camp with the Edmonton Oilers on a PTO, but didn’t make it and the Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch tweets that he has been skating with Ottawa more recently and is ready to make his comeback. The long-time Senator, who played with the franchise last year after six years in Boston, has played in 833 NHL games. He played in all 82 games for Ottawa last season and had five goals and seven assists, but also posted a -17 plus/minus ratio. He has played seven of his 12 years with the Senators.

He is expected to be in Belleville’s lineup for their game Saturday against the Toronto Marlies.

 

Pacific Notes: Goldobin, Gaudreau, Pirri, Garrison

The Vancouver Canucks haven’t had a whole lot of luck with some of their most recent overseas players as in the past six months as the team has lost Anton Rodin and Nikita Tryamkin, who each have decided to leave the NHL. However, that doesn’t look to be the case with Nikolay Goldobin, the former San Jose Sharks 2014 first-rounder, who currently sits in the AHL with the Utica Comets.

In fact, News 1130’s Rick Dhaliwal reports that he talked to Goldobin’s agent, Igor Larianov, who states that they are preaching patience and that Goldobin won’t bolt like Rodin and Tryamkin.

The 22-year-old winger has taken his game to a new level after several years of struggles that had him traded to Vancouver back in March. He has put up six goals and 11 assists in 16 games this year, but still hasn’t been recalled by Vancouver, who have instead chosen to bring up older players with more experience to fill in for injuries. Regardless, Larionov states he believes that Goldobin will be just fine.

  • Wes Gilbertson of the Calgary Sun writes that count veterean Jaromir Jagr as a player who sees a bright future for Calgary Flames center Johnny Gaudreau. The 45-year-old veteran has been talking to him, trying to provide the 24-year-old star winger with the confidence he needs. Jagr, like many people, sees Gaudreau as a perennial contender for the Art Ross Trophy and has told him so. “It’s pretty special when someone says something like that to you. Because it’s not every day that someone as good as him says something about a player that has only been in the league four years,” said Gaudreau. He showed some of that potential in the 2015-16 season when he put up 30 goals and 48 assists in just his second full season. He then saw his numbers drop to just 18 goals and 61 points last year. He already has 10 goal so far this year.
  • Emily Polglaze of the Las Vegas Review-Journal writes that the Vegas Golden Knights have two quality and potential call-ups, if needed, in winger Brandon Pirri and defenseman Jason Garrison, who are thriving with the AHL Chicago Wolves. Pirri, who has been in the AHL since the 2013-14 season, has taken off since returning from a month-long injury on Nov. 8. He has six points in his last seven games and five goals and five assists in 10 games this year. Garrison, who was put on waivers on Oct. 28 has fared well in the AHL also in his comeback bid. He had not made an appearance in the AHL since the 2009-10 season. He has a goal and two assists in eight games.

Canadiens Activate Carey Price Off Injured Reserve

The Canadiens are set to get a boost to their lineup tomorrow night as the team announced that goaltender Carey Price will be activated off injured reserve and will get the start against the Sabres.  Price has been out of the lineup since sustaining a lower-body injury in the pregame warmup on November 2nd in Minnesota (although he did play that full game).

Carey PriceIt will be interesting to see if the time off helps Price revert at least closer to his typical form.  Through 11 starts this season, he has posted a 3.77 GAA and a .877 SV%, both career-worsts by a considerable margin.  He currently has the highest goals against average among all goalies with at least ten appearances and the second-lowest save percentage.

In a corresponding move, rookie Charlie Lindgren has been sent back down to Laval of the AHL.  The rookie has fared quite well since being recalled with a 2.43 GAA and a .924 SV% in nine starts but it’s not ideal to have him on the bench on a regular basis when he is still waiver-exempt.

Recent waiver acquisition Antti Niemi has gotten off to a very tough start to his campaign but played well in his first start with Montreal back on Wednesday and will hold on to the backup spot for the time being.  Al Montoya, their other goaltender, remains out indefinitely with a concussion.

Lightning Claim Chris DiDomenico Off Waivers From Senators

Tampa Bay has added some depth up front by claiming forward Chris DiDomenico off waivers from the Senators, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports (Twitter link).

DiDomenico cleared waivers at the end of training camp but injuries up front gave him a chance to be recalled early on.  He made quite the impact as well, recording five points in his first five games.  However, his ice time decreased in recent games and he picked up just a lone assist in his final seven games with the team.

Lightning GM Steve Yzerman acknowledged earlier today with their recall of Cory Conacher that a couple of forwards were nursing minor injuries so adding DiDomenico should serve as insurance in the short-term.

Intriguingly, this claim comes just two days after Ottawa claimed forward Gabriel Dumont off waivers from the Lightning.  It was DiDomenico who wound up losing his roster spot as a result of Dumont’s addition so in essence, this wound up being a trade completed over the span of several days.

Metropolitan Notes: Chytil, Islanders, Rowney

The Rangers will allow center Filip Chytil to participate in the upcoming World Junior Hockey Championships, reports Larry Brooks of the New York Post.  Chytil, the 21st overall pick back in June, has gotten off to a strong start this season.  He made New York’s lineup out of training camp and since being sent to the minors, he has put up better than a point per game.  Brooks adds that the Rangers are expected to assign him back to AHL Hartford following the tournament instead of loaning him back to HC Zlin of the Czech Extraliga which would have allowed him to close out the season playing closer to home.

  • Although the Islanders have split their goaltending appearances equally between Jaroslav Halak and Thomas Greiss through the first 22 games of the season, head coach Doug Weight told reporters, including Newsday’s Laura Albanese, that this will likely change as one gets on a roll: “We’re behind them, we want to support them, we trust them, but it’s big boy hockey and whoever takes it is going to go and run a little more than the other one, for sure.” At the moment, it looks like Greiss could be the one to get the first chance to play more often having won his last four starts, compiling a .918 SV% in that span.
  • Penguins center Carter Rowney was with the third line in practice on Thursday, signaling that he could be ready to return to the lineup after missing the last 14 games with a broken hand. However, he told Jerry DiPaola of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that a decision on his playing status won’t be made until game time on Friday.  One impact of his return will be shifting Jake Guentzel back to the wing after he played down the middle on Wednesday against the Canucks.

Danis Zaripov Signs Two-Year Deal In KHL

Russian winger Danis Zaripov won’t be crossing the pond after all.  After having his two-year KHL suspension reduced to just six months earlier this week that made him eligible to sign as of Thursday, he has inked a two-year contract with Ak Bars Kazan, the KHL announced (Twitter link).

Zaripov did draw a bit of NHL interest but nothing came of it.  Most recently, the Blues had offered him a PTO deal but he was looking for a guaranteed contract.  Tampa Bay also had interest during the summer while Pittsburgh was known to at least be considering signing him though it’s not known if any offer was ever made.

Interestingly enough, Zaripov opted to not return to Metallurg Magnitogorsk, the franchise he spent the past four years with and where he really made his mark on the league, recording just shy of a point per game (227 points in 229 contests) during that stretch.  It won’t be his first stint with Kazan though as he was previously with them from 2001 through 2013.

If Russia and KHL players are allowed to play in the upcoming Olympics (something that appears to be far from a certainty at this point), Zaripov is a candidate to make that team assuming the long layoff doesn’t prove to be difficult to come back from.  If he makes it, it would be his second appearance in that tournament having also suited up in 2010.

Snapshots: Campbell, Wideman, McDavid

The Los Angeles Kings acquired Torrey Mitchell earlier tonight in a trade with the Montreal Canadiens, but it’s not the only move they’ve made recently. Late last night the team signed goaltender Jack Campbell to a two-year, $1.35MM extension. The deal is two-way for 2018-19, but becomes a one-way contract in 2019-20.

Campbell has rediscovered his game after leaving the Dallas Stars organization, who originally selected him 11th-overall in 2010. He ran with the starting job for the Ontario Reign of the AHL last season, posting a .914 save percentage and has improved on that early in this season. The 25-year old was once considered one of the top goaltending prospects in the league and will continue to try and fight his way towards the NHL. Though Jonathan Quick is signed long-term, the Kings will have an opening to back him up after Darcy Kuemper’s deal expires this summer.

  • Dennis Wideman has returned to hockey, this time as an assistant coach of the OHL’s Kitchener Rangers. The Rangers, who are one of the most impressive teams in the league this season, are currently coached by former NHL defenseman (and Wideman teammate) Jay McKee. Wideman, a Kitchener native, was unable to secure a contract this summer after the Calgary Flames decided not to re-sign him. In 815 career NHL games, he had 387 points.
  • Connor McDavid has been playing through a serious illness according to Darren Dreger of TSN, who reports that the Edmonton Oilers captain has lost between five and ten pounds recently. Amazingly, McDavid has nine points in his last five games, the best stretch of the season so far for the reigning Hart Trophy winner. McDavid and the Oilers remain near the very bottom of the NHL standings, with just 18 points through 22 games.

Torrey Mitchell Traded To Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Kings have acquired forward Torrey Mitchell from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for a conditional 2018 fifth-round draft pick. Should the Kings make the playoffs this season—they currently lead the Pacific Division—the draft pick would turn into the fourth-round selection that Montreal traded them last year in the Dwight King deadline deal.

"<strongMitchell, 32, didn’t have much of a role on the Canadiens this season and had been held scoreless through 11 games. While this isn’t the shake-up some believe Montreal needs, it clears room in the team’s bottom-six for a younger player to try and give the team some spark. Mitchell did have 17 points last season and has been excellent in the faceoff dot since coming to Montreal, but hadn’t been effective in limited minutes this year.

The Kings have had some depth issues down the middle since Jeff Carter’s long-term injury, and Mitchell will give them another option for the fourth line and penalty kill. The veteran of 617 games is familiar with the west coast from his early days in San Jose, where he broke into the league as a defensive-minded forward. Perhaps the Pacific breeze and a more secure role can give him a bit of a youthful burst for the second part of the season.

Mitchell is in the last season of a three-year, $3.6MM deal and will push the Kings a little closer to the cap ceiling. As for Montreal, who already had quite a bit of cap room even with six players on injured reserve (and thus 29 players counting towards the cap), they now have even more room to complete a splashy deal if they want to try and turn around their season right away. The Canadiens were active in the offseason, bringing in Jonathan Drouin and Karl Alzner among others, but were left with several million dollars of cap space after both Alexander Radulov and Andrei Markov left for greener (Dallas pun intended) pastures.

It also returns a draft pick to a team that is looking further from contention than anyone expected. Even with the addition of Drouin, Montreal can’t seem to generate much offense on a nightly basis and is currently led by Brendan Gallagher in goals and points. Drouin, Max Pacioretty and Alex Galchenyuk have combined for just 14 goals and 33 points, a disappointing total from a trio who have all shown elite offensive ability at times in the past. If the Canadiens aren’t able to turn things around from their 8-12-3 start, hoarding draft picks for a deep 2018 class is the likely course of action.
