Tyler Bozak – Pro Hockey Rumors https://www.prohockeyrumors.com Tue, 04 Oct 2022 21:00:27 +0000 en-US hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.5.5 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/files/2017/03/phr-logo-64-40x40.png Tyler Bozak – Pro Hockey Rumors https://www.prohockeyrumors.com 32 32 Snapshots: Golden Knights Goalie Competition, Lambert, Bozak https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2022/10/snapshots-golden-knights-goalie-competition-lambert-bozak.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2022/10/snapshots-golden-knights-goalie-competition-lambert-bozak.html#comments Tue, 04 Oct 2022 21:00:27 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=171970 Ever since it was announced that incumbent starting goalie Robin Lehner would be out for the entirety of the 2022-23 season following hip surgeries, it was clear to many that the Vegas Golden Knights’ situation in their crease would be relatively wide-open. The team is intent on returning to the playoffs after their first playoff miss in franchise history, and they now have a trio of netminders competing for the chance to lead them back to the postseason. Among that trio, it appears we have a frontrunner.

As relayed by SinBin.vegas, Golden Knights head coach Bruce Cassidy told the media that Logan Thompson, an undrafted netminder whose heroics nearly saved the team’s playoff hopes last spring, is “ahead” of both offseason additions Michael Hutchinson and Adin Hill in the team’s goaltending competition. While both Hutchinson and Hill are vastly more experienced than Thompson, Thompson, 25, presumably provides the team with the most upside at that position. As mentioned, Thompson excelled last spring and finished his debut NHL campaign with a .914 save percentage in 19 games. While relying on a goalie with just 20 games of NHL experience is a major risk for a team desperate to resume Stanley Cup contention, it seems that the Golden Knights have faith that Thompson can be the person to lead them back to success.

Now, for some other notes from across the NHL:

  • While forward Brad Lambert was one of the most divisive players of the 2022 entry draft cycle, it seems that such debates over his merit are over in Winnipeg. Per Murat Ates of The Athletic, Lambert’s agent, Rick Curran, and the Winnipeg Jets have had “positive” contract talks regarding an entry-level deal, and Curran is confident that a deal will be reached before the start of the season. While Lambert might have a hard time breaking into one of the Jets’ scoring lines to start this season, his impressive play this preseason could force the Jets into a more aggressive timeline regarding his transition to North American professional hockey.
  • With over 800 NHL games and a Stanley Cup ring on his resume, former St. Louis Blues and Toronto Maple Leafs forward Tyler Bozak has had an accomplished NHL career, and an especially accomplished career given his status as an undrafted player. Per The Athletic’s Jeremy Rutherford, Bozak is in no rush to add to that resume. In a recent mailbag article, (subscription link) Rutherford writes that Bozak is only interested in playing in a “few select situations,” and is “content” hanging up his skates if such an opportunity fails to materialize. Bozak skated in 50 regular-season games for the Blues last season to go along with 12 of their playoff contests, and he scored a combined 14 points in that time frame.

Latest On St. Louis Blues Impending UFAs https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2022/06/latest-on-st-louis-blues-impending-ufas.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2022/06/latest-on-st-louis-blues-impending-ufas.html#comments Thu, 16 Jun 2022 01:43:59 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=165117 When it comes to icing a competitive roster each season, it’s hard to count out the St. Louis Blues and General Manager Doug Armstrong, and in theory, the same should hold true for 2022-23. However, Armstrong and the Blues do have a tricky task ahead of them this offseason: try to re-sign, or replace, four key UFAs this offseason, while re-signing two regular RFAs. Earlier today, The Athletic’s Jeremy Rutherford, who covers the Blues, provided updates on the status of the four impending UFAs (subscription required).

On veteran forward David Perron, Rutherford writes that the two sides are not close to an agreement, but nothing has changed in the two sides’ desire for a reunion. Rutherford points out an interesting fact, though perhaps an unfortunate one for Perron: he has signed five multi-year deals in his NHL career, and played for five NHL teams, but all five of those contracts were signed with St. Louis. Now 34, with 15 NHL seasons and a Stanley Cup on his resume, Perron will likely be in search of stability and while he has, and ultimately has not, had that in St. Louis, it would be foreseeable that he could ask for some sort of tight no-movement clause, however those have been a key sticking point in Armstrong’s negotiations in the past. When asked, Armstrong did not disclose the status of the negotiations, but Rutherford adds a source close to the negotiations informed him that the offer is likely two-years at an AAV much lower than Perron would like.

Breakout goaltender Ville Husso, after just his second NHL season, is set to hit the UFA market and as Rutherford writes, is probably not returning to St. Louis. Rutherford adds that Husso and the Blues are going to begin some sort of dialogue shortly, however the team may be priced out of re-signing him, with The Athletic forecasting a $4.1MM AAV for the 27-year-old. That figure is technically within the Blues’ range given their cap space, but given Jordan Binnington’s rebound performance and the emergence of young goaltender Joel Hofer in the AHL, St. Louis may ultimately be better-off focusing their cap space to address needs, rather than perhaps creating a logjam in net.

Nick Leddy’s value on the open market seems to be a popular debate topic, and rightfully so. A young Leddy compiled several strong seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks before being traded to the New York Islanders, having another excellent season ahead of a seven-year, $38.5MM extension on Long Island. The defenseman had several down years before reviving his career as a steady defenseman who excelled in transition under Barry Trotz, but was traded to the Detroit Red Wings in the summer of 2021 to alleviate cap concerns for the Islanders. Leddy struggled in Detroit, but was again dealt, landing with the Blues where he appeared to return to form.

His struggles in Detroit appear to have taken a toll on his value, with The Athletic projecting just a $1.7MM salary next season, Rutherford chalking that up to Leddy’s time in Detroit, adding that Leddy is seeking a four or five year deal at around $5MM per season. Whether or not he hits his goal, that price-tag may prove too expensive for the Blues, Rutherford adding that a discount, rooted in comfort playing for the Blues, would be what it takes to keep Leddy in the fold most likely, though that is not expected.

Lastly, Rutherford touches on Tyler Bozak, who had signed a one-year, incentive-laden $750K contract for the 2021-22 season. Bozak has seen more limited time and production since coming to St. Louis as compared to his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs, however his ability to play a complete 200 foot game combined with his on and off-ice leadership, has made him a much-appreciated asset for St. Louis. Still, Rutherford says that while Bozak may be had on a similar contract for next season, a return is unlikely given the emergence of forward Alexey Toropchenko, re-signing Logan Brown, and a full-time debut of Jake Neighbours.

At $9MM in cap space, St. Louis is going to be forced to make tough decisions, and must also consider two RFAs this summer in defensemen Niko Mikkola and Scott Perunovich. Further, all of this goes without mentioning their 2023 free agent class that they have to be mindful of, which includes the likes of Jordan Kyrou and Robert Thomas on the RFA side and Ivan Barbashev, Ryan O’Reilly and Vladimir Tarasenko on the UFA side.

Tyler Bozak’s Latest Bonus Pushes Blues’ Overage Penalty Even Further https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2022/05/tyler-bozaks-latest-bonus-pushes-blues-overage-penalty-even-further.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2022/05/tyler-bozaks-latest-bonus-pushes-blues-overage-penalty-even-further.html#comments Sat, 14 May 2022 01:32:38 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=163405 The St. Louis Blues are happy to be advancing to the second round of the playoffs, that much is certain. However, their series win over the Minnesota Wild is not without complications. Veteran center Tyler Bozak earned a $100K bonus with the Blues advancing, CapFriendly reports, which for many teams would not be an issue. However, St. Louis operated so close to the salary cap’s upper limit this season that they had no cushion for performances bonuses they had promised to Bozak and were already in the red. In fact, even before Bozak’s latest bonus was earned the Blues held the third-highest bonus overage penalty for 2022-23 at $1MM, awarded to Bozak for playing in 41+ games this season.

And they’re not out of the woods yet. Again, St. Louis would be nothing but ecstatic if they were to upset the Colorado Avalanche and earn a berth in the Western Conference Final. However, another series win would add an additional $150K bonus to Bozak’s pay check. This would bring the Blues’ total overage penalty to a league-high $1.25MM.

Bozak’s contract, signed late in the offseason, was the Blues’ attempt to fit a serviceable player under the salary cap. As a 35+ player, Bozak was eligible for performance bonuses and was willing to sign for the minimum $750K base salary, all that would be counted against the cap this season, knowing that another $1.25MM could be on the way in bonuses. The Blues were well aware of the implications, but did themselves few favors by not finding other ways to accumulate cap space this season to leave space to absorb those bonus dollars.

Now, St. Louis heads into an offseason in which they had very little cap flexibility as is and will have to manage an additional $1.1-1.25 deficit to their allowable spending. The Blues have over $70MM committed to 15 one-way contracts in 2022-23, leaving just $12.375MM to spread among the additional eight players needed to build a full roster. Except, that value is without taking the bonus overage into account, bringing their real cap flexibility down to $11.125-11.275MM. Two players the team would desperately like to bring back are veteran forward David Perronwho led the team in scoring last season, and breakout goaltender Ville Hussowho won the starting job for much of this season with considerably better play than starter Jordan BinningtonWithout making considerable changes elsewhere on the roster, it doesn’t seem possible for both to return and maybe not either.

Tyler Bozak To Return For The St. Louis Blues https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2022/04/tyler-bozak-to-return-for-the-st-louis-blues.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2022/04/tyler-bozak-to-return-for-the-st-louis-blues.html#respond Sun, 24 Apr 2022 23:13:41 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=162416 7:05 pm: Per the St. Louis Blues, Dakota Joshua has officially been sent down to the Springfield Thunderbirds of the AHL, a move that was expected, and necessitated, by Bozak’s activation off of LTIR. Joshua has been a solid contributor this season, putting up eight points in 30 games this season at the NHL level, and 17 points in 33 games for Springfield in the AHL.

6:13 pm: The St. Louis Blues announced that forward Tyler Bozak will return to the lineup tonight as the team takes on the Ducks in Anaheim. The veteran forward has missed nearly a month-and-a-half with a lower-body injury, last playing on March 13th against the Winnipeg Jets.

According to NHL.com’s Lou Korac, because Bozak was on LTIR after the injury, the Blues will have to make a subsequent roster move to get him back on the roster (link). No move has been formally announced yet, however Dakota Joshua’s name is notably missing from the Blues roster, says Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (link).

Production-wise, Bozak is not the player he once was with the Toronto Maple Leafs, however the veteran is still a key piece of the playoff-bound Blues’ lineup. With Torey Krug and Brayden Schenn out for St. Louis, getting a player like Bozak back is all the more helpful. In 47 games for the Blues this season, Bozaak has just three goals and eight assists, but has been a leader for the team and an asset on their penalty kill.

Tyler Bozak Out At Least A Month https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2022/03/tyler-bozak-out-at-least-a-month.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2022/03/tyler-bozak-out-at-least-a-month.html#respond Fri, 25 Mar 2022 00:05:31 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=159416 March 24: Bozak has officially been moved to injured reserve, the team announced today. The move created roster space for the team to recall defenseman Calle Rosen from the AHL’s Springfield Thunderbirds, giving them an extra defenseman on the roster while Torey Krug is out with injury. Rosen has two assists in six games with the Blues already this season.

March 16: The St. Louis Blues will be without center Tyler Bozak for at least four weeks after he suffered a lower-body injury. The veteran forward will be re-evaluated in a month, suggesting he could miss even more time.

Bozak, 35, hasn’t been very effective this season in his limited role, recording just three goals and 11 points in 47 games. While he was never expected to drive a ton of offense at this point in his career, the Blues are being absolutely caved in with him on the ice, allowing 23 goals against to just nine for at even strength. Those struggles mean that an injury–as tough as it is to hear–could actually be a positive thing for the team at this point, as a change at the bottom of the lineup may be long overdue.

If Bozak is out through the end of the regular season–about six weeks from now–it would actually give the team a tiny bit more cap flexibility, with his $750K hit going on long-term injured reserve. He could then come back for the playoffs when the cap doesn’t matter to bring his experience, leadership, and versatility to the room.

Whether it changes St. Louis’ deadline strategy isn’t really clear, though adding a right-handed center could be in order. The team has Robert Thomas for that when he’s healthy, but the rest of their regular centers (or even those players who regularly take draws) are lefties.

Snapshots: Laine, Bozak, Giroux https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2022/02/snapshots-laine-bozak-giroux.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2022/02/snapshots-laine-bozak-giroux.html#comments Fri, 11 Feb 2022 00:48:54 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=157256 Columbus Blue Jackets forward Carson Meyer was supposed to make his NHL debut tonight, but it’ll have to wait for another day. Patrik Laine took warmups with the team and is playing for Columbus in tonight’s game against Buffalo, per team reporter Jeff Svoboda. Laine was dealing with an undisclosed issue in between games, but it turned out that he wouldn’t miss any time. That’s good for the team, as he’s already missed plenty this season. Through just 25 games, he’s still having a very good season in Columbus, posting 12 goals and 24 points. The pending restricted free agent is quietly producing at the highest rate of his NHL career.

More notes from around the league on this Thursday night:

  • Tyler Bozak isn’t a go tonight for the St. Louis Blues, per NHL.com’s Lou Korac. He wasn’t at morning skate, either, so it’s likely an undisclosed injury keeping Bozak out of the lineup. Returning to the Blues on a one-year deal this offseason, the veteran center has three goals and nine points in 37 games while taking on a fourth-line center role. Dakota Joshua will draw in against the New Jersey Devils.
  • Ahead of the trade deadline, rumours around Philadelphia Flyers captain Claude Giroux will continue to swirl. Colorado Hockey Now’s Adrian Dater reports that Flyers scouts are present at tonight’s game between the Colorado Avalanche and Tampa Bay Lightning, fuelling the fire that the Avalanche have interest in the prized forward. Giroux is in the final year of his contract and tied for the lead in points among Flyers with 36 points. His leadership and all-around acumen would become immediately invaluable to the Avalanche, presumably back as a winger in the top-six. It would give the already stacked Avalanche forward core options galore, potentially allowing head coach Jared Bednar to have Nathan MacKinnon and captain Gabriel Landeskog on separate lines.

Tyler Bozak Placed In COVID Protocol https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2021/11/tyler-bozak-placed-in-covid-protocol.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2021/11/tyler-bozak-placed-in-covid-protocol.html#respond Tue, 30 Nov 2021 16:37:21 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=152726 The COVID announcements just won’t stop. After the Oilers and Bruins will be without Cody Ceci and Bruce Cassidy respectively, the St. Louis Blues are following suit by adding Tyler Bozak to the COVID protocol.

Bozak, 35, has played in all 21 of the Blues games this year and wasn’t one of the players held out because of positive COVID tests earlier in the season. He has just one goal so far, but has contributed seven points in limited minutes. Among regulars, Bozak sees nearly the lowest amount of even-strength time on the team, averaging just over 11 minutes at 5-on-5. His value to the team is more noticeable on the penalty kill, where his faceoff prowess comes in handy (though, he’s currently at the lowest win percentage of his career).

If he has tested positive, which is not confirmed at this point, and is experiencing any symptoms, Bozak will miss a minimum of ten games for the Blues. Normally that would mean a simple recall from the AHL, but St. Louis is actually too close to the cap for that. The team has just over $100K in long-term relief left, not enough for a regular recall. Should they play tonight with one less skater than normal, they would be able to recall a player without his cap being added.

That may not be necessary, as the team was already carrying 13 forwards and eight defensemen, but like earlier in the season the Blues will be in a difficult situation should anyone else be added to the protocol. The team petitioned the league for salary cap relief in cases like this, but the NHL decided not to go down that route at the time.

Snapshots: Dermott, Larkin, Bozak, Oshie https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2021/11/snapshots-dermott-larkin-bozak-oshie.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2021/11/snapshots-dermott-larkin-bozak-oshie.html#respond Mon, 08 Nov 2021 01:56:09 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=151395 While Maple Leafs defenseman Travis Dermott has been in trade speculation over the past week or so, he doesn’t seem to be worried about it, telling TSN’s Mark Masters that he’s not too worried about it, referencing it’s not the first time he has been in speculation.  Part of the rationale behind the idea he could move was for salary cap purposes although the injury to Petr Mrazek – which will keep him out long enough to be LTIR-eligible – lessens the need to make a move to free up cap room in the short term.

Elsewhere around the NHL:

  • Red Wings center Dylan Larkin has returned to the team after missing the last three games due to unspecified personal reasons, relays Ted Kulfan of The Detroit News. The 25-year-old is a welcome return having averaged a point per game through his first eight games while averaging nearly 18 minutes a night and playing in all situations.
  • With Blues center Tyler Bozak suiting up tonight Anaheim, he triggers a $750K bonus in his contract, notes Tom Timmermann of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (Twitter link). Those are supposed to be charged in the year they’re earned but a team can go over the cap with bonuses and take the charge the following season.  Considering their current cap situation, the latter could be the case with Bozak, who still has three other bonuses in his deal, per CapFriendly.
  • Capitals GM Brian MacLellan told Samantha Pell of the Washington Post that although winger T.J. Oshie is currently in a walking boot, he is expected to return to the ice in some capacity this week. That would certainly be welcome news for Washington which has been hit hard on the injury front with center Nicklas Backstrom and Anthony Mantha also out of the lineup at the moment.

Tyler Bozak Signs With St. Louis Blues https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2021/09/tyler-bozak-signs-with-st-louis-blues.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2021/09/tyler-bozak-signs-with-st-louis-blues.html#comments Tue, 14 Sep 2021 15:08:48 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=147801 Why not return to the place where you won it all? Tyler Bozak has re-signed with the St. Louis Blues, inking a one-year contract. The deal is worth a base salary of $750K but also includes performance bonuses. Those bonuses, based on games played and playoff success, can increase Bozak’s salary to $2MM, according to Andy Strickland of Bally Sports Midwest. CapFriendly reports the deal includes a no-trade clause through March 6, 2022, and tweets the full bonus structure:

  • 10 GP: $750K
  • 41 GP: $250K
  • Winning round 1: $100K
  • Winning round 2: $150K

Bozak, 35, was actually listed 35th on our list of the Top 50 UFAs, where we predicted he would sign a one-year, bonus-laden deal. It seemed likely, given the dearth of real center options available, that Bozak would be able to secure more than the league minimum for his base salary. Perhaps he could have, had he not returned to St. Louis, where the Blues are currently tapped out when it comes to the salary cap ceiling. The team is pushing right up against the upper limit but still has Robert Thomas to sign, which will put them over for the start of the season.

Oskar Sundqvist will likely open the year on long-term injured reserve, opening some cap flexibility and a lineup spot for Bozak, who is coming in on a very reasonable deal. Though his bonuses will likely bring him higher than the league minimum of $750K, those can actually be carried to next season’s cap as an overage if necessary. His very low base salary gives the Blues as much flexibility as possible, not to mention brings back a valuable veteran centerman.

Bozak may not be the player that recorded 55 points in 2016-17, but he’s still one of the best faceoff men in the league, winning 56.8% of his draws last season. He will offer the team excellent depth down the middle as they look to rebound from a disappointing 2020-21, where they were pummeled by the Colorado Avalanche in the first round of the playoffs. With new faces like Pavel Buchnevich and Brandon Saad adding a new dimension to the forward group, the team has built quite the diverse lineup. Adding Bozak for a smaller cap hit (initially) than Kyle Clifford and Mackenzie MacEachern only helps things.

Snapshots: Bozak, Kesler, Reynolds https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2021/09/snapshots-bozak-kesler-reynolds.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2021/09/snapshots-bozak-kesler-reynolds.html#comments Fri, 10 Sep 2021 18:02:59 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=147647 There are a handful of experienced NHL veterans still out on the market, with one being 35-year-old Tyler Bozak. The 2019 Stanley Cup champion is still one of the best faceoff men in the league and is a legitimate option down the middle of the ice. Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports that clubs expect Bozak to make a final decision in the next few days, and wonders if the Pittsburgh Penguins may be one of them given the injuries to Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.

Bozak actually ranked 35th on our list of the Top 50 Unrestricted free agents, but we still expected him to get just a one-year deal at his age. While he may not be the fleetest of foot, there are still valuable attributes that can help a team win if deployed properly.

  • Ryan Kesler, who is still technically an active NHL player given his contract with the Anaheim Ducks won’t expire until the end of 2021-22, has accepted a role with the U.S. National Team Development Program. The veteran forward will serve as a volunteer assistant coach with the U18 group and can share his experience of more than 1,000 games in the NHL. Kesler’s contract, which carries a $6.875MM cap hit, will once again be moved to long-term injured reserve if the Ducks end up needing cap space.
  • Prospect camps are opening across the league, and Scott Wheeler of The Athletic notes that Peter Reynolds, his highest-ranked undrafted player, will be in attendance with the Columbus Blue Jackets. Wheeler had Reynolds ranked as his 71st best prospect in this year’s draft after a strong rookie season in the QMJHL, but he was passed over entirely. NHL Central Scouting had the undersized forward ranked 80th among North American skaters.

Free Agent Profile: Tyler Bozak https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2021/08/free-agent-profile-tyler-bozak.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2021/08/free-agent-profile-tyler-bozak.html#comments Sat, 07 Aug 2021 17:19:09 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=145826 It wasn’t a particularly strong free agent market down the middle this summer and most of the notable ones signed within the first couple of days of the market opening up.  One of the exceptions is Tyler Bozak and as a result, he finds himself in good shape in terms of trying to find his next home.

The 35-year-old has seen his production dip over the past few years as he has gone from someone logging more than 20 minutes per night with Toronto to playing more of a third line role which is where he best fits at this stage of his career.  He’s also now coming off a season that saw him miss 21 games due to a concussion which certainly doesn’t help his value.

But what does help his value is his two-way ability.  He can log a regular shift on the penalty kill and consistently is well above average at the faceoff dot which is always appealing to coaches.  On the offensive front, he has averaged at least 0.4 points per game in each season throughout his career and actually is coming off his best year in that stat since 2016-17 although with him playing the fewest games in a single season of his career, it’s a bit of a small sample size.

Nevertheless, Bozak can still be counted on to contribute a bit offensively, kill penalties, and take some key situational faceoffs.  That’s not a $5MM profile anymore like his last contract was but there is definitely a role for him to still fill.

Stats

2020-21: 31 GP, 5-12-17, -3 rating, 10 PIMS, 35 shots, 42.8 CF%, 14:55 ATOI, 56.8% faceoffs

Career: 764 GP, 167-282-449, -84 rating, 222 PIMS, 1,268 shots, 48.9 CF%, 17:47 ATOI, 53.8% faceoffs

Potential Suitors

Teams looking for an upgrade on the third line or a veteran to insulate some younger options should have some interest in Bozak.  That’s a relatively specific role to fill but one that makes sense for prospective contenders as well as rebuilding teams that could use him for a few months and then flip him to a contender closer to the trade deadline.

In the East, Montreal lost Phillip Danault to Los Angeles in free agency, their two top centers are currently 21 years old, and their likely third line pivot in Jake Evans has less than a full year of NHL games under his belt including playoffs.  Bozak would fit as some veteran insurance for the youngsters while replacing Danault’s situational faceoff role.  Boston hasn’t replaced David Krejci down the middle and while Bozak wouldn’t be a direct replacement, he’d give them some depth but making it work on the salary cap would be a challenge.  The Rangers could opt to put Filip Chytil back on the wing which would open up a spot on the third line for Bozak and a one-year term fits with the pricey contracts that are on the horizon a year from now.  Florida makes some sense as well with Bozak filling the role vacated by Alexander Wennberg but they need to get Sam Reinhart re-signed first to see what money they have left.

Out West, St. Louis still makes plenty of sense for Bozak aside from their cap situation.  If they can find a taker for Vladimir Tarasenko, the move would likely free up enough space to bring back Bozak to fill the same role on the depth chart he had last season.  If Colorado is opening to spending right to the Upper Limit in the offseason, Bozak would certainly fit on their third line although there’s definitely risk to being capped out that early.  Just ask Vegas about that; they could use Bozak and have LTIR room to add him into although getting back into compliance when Alex Tuch is ready to return would put them right back where they were last season in terms of dancing around the cap.  Nashville certainly has the cap space and an opening to add Bozak but if they’re heading towards something resembling a rebuild, it may not be the best fit.

Projected Contract

Bozak ranked 35th on our Top 50 UFA list with a projected one-year deal with a base salary of $2.5MM and $1MM in performance bonuses.  (As Bozak is 35, he’s eligible for a contract with incentives as long as it’s a one-year agreement.)  There are enough spots for him to command that price tag but if he wants to go to a contender, he may have to take a lesser deal or at least push more of the guaranteed money into incentives to give the signing team the flexibility to get a deal done.  At this point in free agency, Bozak is the best option left among middlemen and unless he plans to wait out the Tarasenko situation, he should sign his next contract fairly soon.

Speaking to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, head coach Craig Berube displayed optimism when discussing the health of his veteran center, who was back at practice on Friday. “He’s gonna get some work here in the next few days and he could be available soon,” Berube said. “It’s good to see him out there and working… making some real good progress.” Bozak has not played since January 26th, when he was forced out of game against the Vegas Golden Knights with an apparent concussion. With the Blue about to embark on a six-game road trip, they will have to decide if bringing Bozak is the right move or if he requires additional time before his return. While St. Louis also just got Vladimir Tarasenko back and Oskar Sundqvist returned from a short-term injury, they could still use all the help they can get. Colton Parayko, Jaden Schwartz, Ivan Barbashev, Robert Thomas, Jacob De La Roseand more are still among the Blues’ injured.

  • The news on Carolina Hurricanes forward Vincent Trocheck does not sound as optimistic. Head coach Rod Brind’Amour tells The Athletic’s Sara Civian that Trocheck’s recent upper-body injury will keep him sidelined for “longer than hoped”. The coach held back on providing any definitive timeline, but any long-term absence for Trocheck will be a major loss for the team. In his first full season with the Hurricanes, Trocheck has been a point-per-game player and is tied with Sebastian Aho for the team’s scoring lead. If there is one silver lining for Carolina, it is that the injury occurred before the trade deadline; with a considerable amount of cap space, the ’Canes still have time to bring in help to make up for an extended period without Trocheck.
  • Back on the positive side, the Boston Bruins have been dealing with an onslaught of injuries for some time, but there could be some help on the way. Head coach Bruce Cassidy announced today that veteran defenseman Kevan Miller has resumed skating and is likely to travel with the team on their upcoming road trip. Miller has been resting his surgically-repaired knee, but seems like he is ready to get back on the ice. Cassidy also said that defenseman Brandon Carlo is “coming around” and, while he is unsure if it will happen, there is at least some consideration that he could travel as well. This is the first concrete update on Carlo since he was hospitalized by a high hit from Washington’s Tom Wilson, but its seems that Carlo will not be out for a lengthy period as many feared.
  • It’s a scary time for any unknown illness given the shadow of the Coronavirus, so the Los Angeles Kings played it safe and cancelled practice this morning, citing an “illness” spreading around the group. Head coach Todd McLellan and the Kings do not believe that this is COVID, but a seasonal virus. However, the team will wait to see what their latest batch of test results say. Defenseman Olli Maatta is currently on the league’s COVID Protocal Related Absences list, though Alex Iafallo missed the team’s last game with similar symptoms and did not test positive for COVID. Obviously, the hope of all involved is that this is what McLellan believe it to be: some unrelated bug going around the locker room.

Injury Notes: Blues, Armia, Necas, Kase https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2021/02/injury-notes-blues-armia-necas-kase.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2021/02/injury-notes-blues-armia-necas-kase.html#comments Sat, 06 Feb 2021 20:02:55 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=132914 The St. Louis Blues’ Tyler Bozakwho has been sidelined since January 26th, has finally been retroactively placed on the injured reserve per a team release. Ironically, the Blues waited so long to make the the move that Bozak is already eligible to be activated from IR. However, he is still considered day-to-day and there is not definitive timeline for his return. Bozak has been out with an undisclosed upper-body injury since taking a heavy hit from Vegas’ Mark Stone nearly two weeks ago. Defenseman Marco Scandella has additionally been ruled out for the time being with an upper-body injury, reports Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Scandella was a late scratch for the Blues’ game on Thursday, believed to have been the result of this same nagging injury. Thomas adds that Zach Sanford is also out for the Blues with, of all things in the age of COVID, the flu. Sanford is off to a slow start this season despite playing on the team’s top line recently, but perhaps taking some time to get back to full strength will put him back on track.

  • Sanford is not alone in his struggles with the flu. While the virus is certainly the lesser of two evils this season, it is still hampering a return to action for the Montreal Canadiens’ Joel Armia as well. Armia, who was initially sidelined by a concussion, is doing better in that regard, head coach Claude Julien tells TSN’s John Lu. However, he has been unable to skate with the team due to flu symptoms. The team hopes to have Armia back at practice on Monday at the earliest.
  • Young Carolina Hurricanes forward Martin Necas has also entered the concussion protocol after suffering an injury on Thursday, reports Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer. However, head coach Rod Brind’Amour is not worried that he will miss a considerable amount of time. Specifically, he tells Alexander that Necas is “going to be out for a little while but I don’t think it’s going to be very long.” His injury is only being termed as an “upper-body” ailment.
  • The Boston Bruins are hoping to have Jake DeBrusk and Matt Grzelcyk back before their next game on Wednesday, but it seems Ondrej Kase is still a ways behind in his recovery from a concussion. Head coach Bruce Cassidy tells The Athletic’s Fluto Shinzawa that Kase has been able to ride the exercise bike, but he has not yet resumed skating. Kase has been out since the Bruins’ second game of the season and is currently on injured reserve. A talented, but injury-prone young forward with a history of head trauma, Kase needs to return to the Bruins lineup and show some durability and consistency and establish chemistry with his team ahead of an off-season in which he will be a restricted free agent and the subject of a difficult Expansion Draft decision.

Snapshots: Sabres, Capitals, Blues https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2021/01/snapshots-sabres-capitals-blues.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2021/01/snapshots-sabres-capitals-blues.html#respond Sat, 30 Jan 2021 16:51:55 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=132388 Sabres winger Sam Reinhart is dealing with an upper-body injury, notes Lance Lysowski of The Buffalo News.  While he didn’t leave Thursday’s game, he was absent from practice on Friday and he will at least miss today’s game while his availability for Sunday’s rematch against New Jersey is still up in the air.  The 25-year-old is off to a good start this season with three goals and three assists in eight games and will be a restricted free agent for the final time this summer.

Meanwhile, Lysowski adds (Twitter link) that prospect Jack Quinn is dealing with an upper-body injury of his own.  He’s currently on the taxi squad but the Sabres may send him to AHL Rochester once he recovers.  While he’s still junior-aged, Quinn can go to the minors as long as the OHL season continues to be delayed.

Elsewhere around the league:

  • Capitals winger Alex Ovechkin and Dmitry Orlov have been cleared from the CPRA list, relays Samantha Pell of the Washington Post (Twitter link). The two took part in Washington’s morning skate today but Evgeny Kuznetsov and Ilya Samsonov weren’t, meaning their time on the list will continue.  Meanwhile, Pell adds in a separate tweet that center Lars Eller also skated earlier today in a non-contact sweater after missing Thursday’s contest due to an upper-body injury.
  • The Blues will be without center Tyler Bozak for their two games this weekend against Anaheim, reports Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He was injured on a hit from Vegas winger Mark Stone on Tuesday night, one that had St. Louis hoping for some sort of supplemental discipline although none was coming.  Sammy Blais will take Bozak’s spot in the lineup.  As for defenseman Robert Bortuzzo, he’s expected to take the gameday skate today with head coach Craig Berube hoping that he’ll be available on Sunday.

Blues, Alex Pietrangelo Discussing New Deal https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2020/10/blues-alex-pietrangelo-discussing-new-deal.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2020/10/blues-alex-pietrangelo-discussing-new-deal.html#comments Fri, 09 Oct 2020 12:21:18 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=126001 While word emerged last month that the Blues had advised their captain Alex Pietrangelo to test the open market, the two sides have re-engaged in conversations in the hours leading up to the opening of the market, reports Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic (subscription link).  They have already lost the ability to offer him an eight-year deal, however, and are now capped at offering seven like any other team.

Rutherford cautions that no real progress has been made in talks at this point but it appears that St. Louis is willing to be more flexible in the structuring of their offer.  The team does not offer signing bonuses or no-move clauses but perhaps there is some wiggle room in that area now as they look to make a last-ditch effort to keep Pietrangelo.

With roughly $5MM in cap space to work with, St. Louis would need to clear out some salary to be able to afford to keep the 30-year-old around.  Rutherford reports that it’s believed teams are willing to take on the final year of Tyler Bozak’s $5MM deal but that the Blues would need to provide an incentive to clear out the center.  Justin Faulk’s $6.5MM pact for seven seasons could also be in play but again would require a sweetener to move.  Those options will only likely be considered if St. Louis can keep their top defender in the fold by getting Pietrangelo to sign on the dotted line.
