Since being claimed on January 4th, the 24 year old played in just five games with Carolina, picking up two assists while averaging 13:28 per game.  However, he was also a healthy scratch 12 times in that span.  On the season between the Blues and Hurricanes, he has two assists in nine games while logging 10:44 per game in ice time.  In his career, he has five goals and five assists in 35 games.  Rattie is making $650K this season and will be a restricted free agent this summer with arbitration eligibility.

Rattie wasn’t the only player put on waivers on Saturday as the Sabres placed blueliner Taylor Fedun on the wire per Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston (Twitter link).  The defenseman has played in 25 games with Buffalo this season, picking up seven assists while playing a little under 14 minutes per night.  He has been a much bigger offensive threat at the minor league level, recording 17 points (4-13-17) in just 20 games with Buffalo’s AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans.  Buffalo activated fellow rearguard Cody Franson off of injured reserve earlier today, leaving Buffalo with eight defensemen in the active roster.  Fedun carries a cap hit of just $600K and is slated to be an unrestricted free agent in July.

Still with the waiver wire, Devils center Sergey Kalinin cleared, reports Andrew Gross of the North Jersey Record (Twitter link).  He has been assigned to their AHL affiliate in Albany.

Devils Place Sergey Kalinin On Waivers https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2017/02/devils-kalinin-waivers.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2017/02/devils-kalinin-waivers.html#respond Fri, 17 Feb 2017 18:28:00 +0000 https://phr.traderumors.com/?p=63748 As predicted in their recent Trade Deadline Primer, the New Jersey Devils appear to have reached the end of their rope with young forward Sergey Kalinin. TVA’s Renaud Lavoie reports that the Devils have placed Kalinin on waivers today. It’s unknown whether or not GM Ray Shero explored trading the center beforehand, but one way or another, they appear willing to lose him at this point in time.

Kalinin is far from a lock to be claimed on waivers in the next 24 hours, though. After breaking into the KHL at just 19 years old and establishing himself as a consistent two-way player capable of producing decent offensive numbers, many thought that his signing by the Devils was a shrewd move by Shero. When Kalinin contributed 15 points in his rookie year and showed that he could be a dominant physical threat, the future seemed bright for a solid bottom-six role. Yet, just a year later, his development seems to have hit a wall. Kalinin has just four points in 42 games, continues to struggle mightily at the face-off dot, and for some reason has disappeared defensively. The 25-year-old forward has lost the majority of his value since he was an unknown commodity in Russia and now that other teams have gotten a good look at what Kalinin is, they may shy away from taking a chance of their own.

Kalinin will be a restricted free agent at the end of the season, so New Jersey or another team will have some control over his future if they’re interested in retaining him. However, since he is in just his second season in North America, he does not qualify to be exposed in the Expansion Draft, in case any teams hoped to scoop him up and offer him to the Vegas Golden Knights. Without that added bonus, Kalinin seems very likely clear waivers and head to Albany of the AHL by this time tomorrow. If he isn’t able to make up some NHL good will by the end of the season, Kalinin will likely be back in the KHL next year.

Snapshots: Boucher, Islanders, Kalinin, Predators https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2016/10/snapshots-islanders-predators.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2016/10/snapshots-islanders-predators.html#respond Sat, 22 Oct 2016 15:42:19 +0000 https://phr.traderumors.com/?p=57596 Ottawa head coach Guy Boucher will face his former team in Tampa Bay for the first time since they fired him back in 2013 but Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun notes that Boucher doesn’t bear any ill will towards his former organization.

Part of the reason for that is the amount of time that has passed since he was let go but a main reason is that very few players remain from Boucher’s tenure – just center Steven Stamkos and defenseman Victor Hedman.  In other words, GM Steve Yzerman has practically turned over the entire team over in the last three and a half years which Boucher believes makes this basically just another game for him:

“It’s been awhile. We’re talking almost four years and just so much has changed.  It would be a lot harder (if) it was all the guys I coached and those guys are coming in. Then I guess there would be emotion there.”

Despite all of the turnover, it’s hard to say that the changes haven’t worked as under Jon Cooper, the team has made three straight postseason appearances and has reached the third round of the playoffs in each of the last two seasons.

Other notes from around the league:

  • Islanders defenseman Ryan Pulock made his season debut last night but will have to wait a while to play his second game. He left the game yesterday after just four shifts after suffering a lower body injury and Newsday’s Arthur Staple reports (via Twitter) that he will be out for the next four to six weeks.  Pulock was taking the place of Nick Leddy who missed last night’s game with an upper body issue but Staple adds that Leddy is taking part in practice today.
  • The Devils are expected to activate center Sergei Kalinin (illness) off of injured reserve prior to tonight’s game against Minnesota, notes Fire and Ice’s Andrew Gross. To make room for him on the active roster, the team announced that they have sent left winger Miles Wood, their lone waiver exempt forward among their depth players, to their AHL affiliate in Albany.
  • Over the years, there haven’t been many Swiss-born NHL players but as Adam Vingan of The Tennessean writes, the Predators have had success finding players from there recently. There are currently eight Swiss players in the league and Nashville has three of them – defensemen Roman Josi and Yannick Weber as well as left winger Kevin Fiala.  They’re only the second team in NHL history to have three Swiss players on their roster.

Snapshots: Kovalev, Aulie, Kalinin, Boll https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2016/10/snapshots-kovalev-kalinin.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2016/10/snapshots-kovalev-kalinin.html#respond Tue, 18 Oct 2016 19:55:27 +0000 https://phr.traderumors.com/?p=57432 Long-time NHL forward Alexei Kovalev is coming out of retirement as he is expected to play for EHC Visp of the Swiss NLB today according to a report from Swiss Hockey News.  The 43 year old last played with Visp back in 2013-14 before hanging up the skates.  Kovalev is currently their team manager but has been skating with the club all season and due to an injury to one of their import players, a spot in the lineup has opened up for him.

Kovalev played in over 1,300 games in his NHL career with the Rangers, Penguins, Canadiens, Senators, and Panthers.  With 1,029 points in that span, he ranks third all-time among Russian scorers in NHL history.

Elsewhere around the hockey world:

  • Defenseman Keith Aulie, who attended training camp on a PTO with Columbus, has signed a tryout deal with their AHL affiliate in Cleveland, Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch notes on Twitter. Aulie last played in the NHL with Edmonton back in 2014-15, where he got into 31 games.  He spent most of last season with HIFK in Finland.
  • Devils forward Sergei Kalinin has recovered from his illness that had him on injured reserve, reports Andrew Gross of Fire and Ice. However, he has not yet been activated off IR and won’t be eligible to suit up until Thursday night against the Bruins.  Kalinin has not yet played this season and is coming off an eight goal, seven assist rookie campaign with New Jersey.
  • Anaheim right winger Jared Boll is settling in as he plays his first season outside of Columbus where he spent nine seasons, writes Eric Stephens of the OC Register. He has yet to see much ice time this year as he is averaging less than five minutes per game, in large part due to the fact that the Ducks have yet to have the lead this season, which has resulted in their fourth line being overlooked often.  With over 1,200 penalty minutes in his career, Boll knows his role will be the same in Anaheim as it was with the Jackets, one where he will be expected to play physical every time the fourth line gets out on the ice.
