Häman Aktell, who turns 26 tomorrow, returns for his second season in North America after signing a one-year entry-level contract with the Caps last offseason. Nashville’s 2016 fourth-round pick never signed with the Preds, staying in his native Sweden up until last season and letting his exclusive signing window lapse.

It took a while for Häman Aktell to land an everyday role in the top-level Swedish Hockey League, but upon doing so in 2020, he immediately became a part of a strong Växjö Lakers club that won two SHL titles in the span of three seasons. Between the 2020-21 and 2022-23 campaigns, Häman Aktell recorded 63 points (17 goals, 46 assists) in 151 games along with a +40 rating.

His first season with the Caps was unimpressive, though. He spent most of it on assignment to AHL Hershey, where he didn’t make as much of an impact offensively as expected, with only 11 points (two goals, nine assists) in 55 regular-season games. A rash of injuries on the Washington blue line early in the season did give Häman Aktell the chance at his NHL debut, recording an assist and a -2 rating in six appearances while averaging an extremely limited 10:38 per game.

He ended his season on a high note, though, breaking out for five goals and four assists in 17 postseason games as he helped guide Hershey to its second straight Calder Cup. His signing rights stuck with the Caps as an RFA this summer after they issued him a qualifying offer prior to the June 30 deadline.

Sutter, 24, will return for his sixth campaign in Hershey next season. A third-round pick of the Caps in 2018, he’s yet to make his NHL debut but has garnered over $700K in estimated career earnings (CapFriendly) and has played a depth role in Hershey’s back-to-back championships. The son of NHL veteran Ron Sutter had a career-high nine goals and 23 points in 66 games for the Bears last season and is one of their biggest bodies at 6’4″ and 207 lbs. Like Häman Aktell, Washington had issued him a qualifying offer to keep him as an RFA.

Of note, Hardy Haman Aktell did not get recalled in this transaction; likely a result of Joel Edmundson not being placed on LTIR to start the season. This is a good sign that Edmundson may not be out for much longer, but Washington will be starting the season with 13 forwards and seven defensemen as a result.

These roster moves are headlined by a pair of former First Round picks – McMichael the 25th selection in 2019 and Miroshnichenko the 20th choice in 2022. McMichael joined the Capitals organization a year after his draft day, playing his rookie season in the AHL during the 2020-21 campaign and scoring 27 points in 33 games. Those were impressive enough numbers to earn McMichael a full-time spot on the NHL roster in 2021-22, although he only managed 18 points in 68 games and ultimately earned a demotion to the AHL for last season. On the other hand, Miroshnichenko is brand new to North American pros, coming over from Russia for Washington’s training camp this year. The 19-year-old has been the focus of a lot of scrutiny when it comes to how he was deployed in Russia – finding himself constantly moving back and forth between the country’s second-tier league and their U21 league, the VHL, and MHL respectively, over the last three seasons. His assignment to Hershey will not only represent his first taste of professional hockey overseas, but it should also provide much-needed roster stability. Miroshnichenko was a highly-regarded prospect in his draft year, so attention will undoubtedly be on him as he begins working toward an NHL role.

Ehlers has had a closer relationship with injured reserve in recent years, spending six weeks on the list with a hernia last season. He scored 38 points in the 45 games he did appear in during the 2022-23 season. This was a 69-point scoring pace, which would have been the most points of Ehlers’ eight-year NHL career. His career totals are up to 523 games, 176 goals, and 396 points. His scoring is an important attribute of Winnipeg’s top-six. The team will hope he’s moved on from his injury bug as he suits up for the start of their 2023-24 campaign.

Other notes from around the league:

• The Arizona Coyotes have shifted some players around as they trim down to a final NHL roster. Michael Kesselring, Victor Soderstrom, Vladislav Kolyachonok, and Zach Sanford have all been assigned to Tuscon in the AHL.
• Anaheim has assigned Andrew Agozzino and Alex Stalock, both NHL veterans, to their AHL affiliate, the San Diego Gulls.
• The Washington Capitals have made a series of moves, assigning Max Pacioretty to long-term injured reserve, Joel Edmundson to injured reserve, and Hardy Haman Aktell, Aliaksei Protas, and Connor McMichael to Hershey in the AHL. They have also recalled Riley Sutter to the NHL roster.

O’Connor writes on X that Foerster is skating on a line at today’s practice alongside Flyers number-one center Sean Couturier and established top-six contributor Joel Farabee, while Brink “looks like an extra.” This could indicate that Foerster is ticketed for top-line NHL duty to start the season while Brink gets sent back to AHL Lehigh Valley, though it’s obviously not a sure thing. Anything can happen still at this stage of the preseason, though this development does suggest that Flyers fans should expect to see Foerster wearing the orange and black on opening night next week.

Some other notes from what is widely expected to be a hotly contested Metropolitan Division:

• The Washington Capitals have recalled three players who had been previously waived and sent to the AHL’s Hershey Bears: forward Riley Sutter and Ethen Frank as well as defenseman Chase Priskie. Each player has likely been returned to the Capitals’ roster in order to beef up its lineup for the preseason, and the trio are all unlikely to factor into Washington’s NHL plans for opening night.
•  The New York Rangers have sent goaltender Dylan Garand back to the AHL after recalling him just two days ago. While backup goaltender Jonathan Quick has struggled this preseason, the 21-year-old former WHL star is not yet believed to be under legitimate consideration for the backup role behind superstar netminder Igor Shesterkin. He’ll begin the year in Hartford, where he’ll look to continue the progress he made late last season into 2023-24, potentially becoming the Wolf Pack’s true number-one goalie over veteran Louis Domingue.

Sutter was a restricted free agent without any arbitration rights, meaning the overwhelming likelihood was always that he’d be back with the organization that drafted him 93rd overall in 2018, and now today’s announcement confirms it.

The versatile 23-year-old forward is coming off a fourth consecutive season playing with the AHL’s Hershey Bears, and this one was his most productive yet. He set a career-high with 12 points in 69 games, and he even had a big moment in the playoffs scoring the overtime winner in Game Three of the Calder Cup Finals. That goal secured a crucial win that helped turn the tide of the series and eventually lead to a Calder Cup Championship for Hershey.

Sutter is a six-foot-four, 204-pound winger who plays a hard-nosed physical game and serves as a bottom-six defensive forward for Hershey head coach Todd Nelson. Seeing as the offensive production he managed in the WHL has almost completely evaporated at the pro level, it’s not easy to imagine Sutter as a contender for an NHL call-up anytime soon.

But with his extension, he’ll get another year in Hershey and another season to develop his game and potentially make a push for an even greater role in the Bears’ lineup.

The Capitals selected Sutter in the third round (93rd overall) back in June out of Everett of the WHL.  While his regular season numbers weren’t particularly dominant (53 points in 68 games), he picked up his performance in the postseason, collecting nine goals and ten assists in 21 contests, good for fifth on the Silvertips in scoring.

The 18-year-old is part of the Sutter family that has plenty of NHL bloodlines.  His father, Ron, played in nearly 1,100 NHL games while his uncles (Brian, Brent, Darryl, Duane, and Rich) all have NHL connections as well.

Sutter has already been sent back to Everett for the 2018-19 campaign and has a pair of assists in three games so far.  As a result of his return to junior, his contract will slide a year and will still have three years remaining on it in 2019-20.  The deal will have a slightly different AAV at that time based on how much of a signing bonus Washington gave him.

Riley Sutter is the son of Ron Sutter, who likely has him beat in terms of draft position. Ron was the fourth overall pick in 1982 by the Philadelphia Flyers, whom he played with for nine seasons to begin his 1000+ game NHL career. Ron’s twin brother, Riley’s uncle, Rich Sutter was famously selected six slot behind his brother in 1982, tenth overall by the rival Pittsburgh Penguins. Riley’s other uncles include Brian Sutter, the long-time captain of the St. Louis Blues drafted in the second round in 1976, Duane Sutter, the 17th overall pick in 1979, Brent Sutter, the 17th overall pick a year later and arguably the best of the Sutter brothers with over 800 points in his 17-year career (and a former NHL coach to boot), and, of course, the most relevant of the Sutters right now, recently relieved Los Angeles Kings coach Darryl Sutter, who also played 400+ NHL games. Then there’s the next generation of Sutters, Riley’s cousins, highlighted by Vancouver Canucks center and 2007 11th overall pick Brandon Sutter, Brent’s son. Cousins Shaun Sutter, Brett Sutter, Brody Sutter, and Lukas Sutter were all additionally drafted into the NHL, but have not come close to the success of their fathers and uncles or even Brandon. Riley hopes to end the streak of underwhelming Sutter’s once he is drafted this June.

So what does the youngest Sutter bring to the table? The 6’2″, 201-lb. forward has a power forward frame and began to find his scoring touch last season with 39 points, including 20 goals, in 67 games for the Silvertips. Early in 2017-18, that pace has picked up. Sutter has 13 points, again the majority of which are goals, in his first 16 games. A physical game at his age is attractive enough, but the scoring touch and quick skating he has displayed, as well as the undeniable intangibles of being from hockey royalty, have boosted Sutter up draft boards. In the latest rankings from International Scouting Services, Sutter is up all the way to 16th, helped out by his early results (as well as a severe lack of right wings at the top of the class). If he can keep his scoring up, Riley very well could be the latest Sutter to be a first round pick and may even be able to push to become the second highest-drafted family member, behind his own father, if he can crack the top ten in June.
