The organization has loaned defenseman Patrik Koch to HC Oceláři Třinec and forward Milos Kelemen to HC Dynamo Pardubice. Both players had already registered double-digit games with the AHL’s Tucson Roadrunners this season.

It will be Koch’s second go around in the Extraliga. He played three years for the HC Vítkovice from 2020 to 2023 collecting six goals and 23 points in 156 contests. He’s in his second year with Utah (including one year with the now-defunct Arizona Coyotes organization) after signing a one-year, $775K agreement on June 20th.

He’s been a solid presence for the Roadrunners over the last two years scoring one goal and 17 points in 73 AHL contests. There was some early indication that he might crack Utah’s opening night roster as a depth defenseman after a strong showing in the IIHF World Championships and the NHL preseason. He scored one goal and four points in eight tournament games for Team Slovakia and helped them earn a birth into the knockout round.

He’ll now be taking his talents back to Czechia with Kelemen. The latter was signed out of the Extraliga in 2022 after scoring five goals and 18 points in 44 games for BK Mladá Boleslav in 2021-22. He’s been a consistent middle-six scorer for the Roadrunners over the past three years scoring 31 goals and 68 points in 124 games. He’s the only one of the pair that has already made his NHL debut scoring one goal and two points in 24 games for the Coyotes from 2022 to 2024.

Without a real pathway to playing time in the NHL, the Utah Hockey Club is returning the two Slovakians to a more comfortable lifestyle. They are both playing on expiring contracts this year and may continue the rest of their professional careers overseas.

Sean Durzi, John Marino Undergo Surgery; Maveric Lamoureux Recalled https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2024/10/sean-durzi-john-marino-undergo-surgery.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2024/10/sean-durzi-john-marino-undergo-surgery.html#comments Wed, 23 Oct 2024 15:52:59 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=219172 Utah defensemen Sean Durzi and John Marino have both undergone surgeries that will see them sit out most of the season, the team announced. Durzi will be out four to six months after having his right shoulder surgically repaired, while Marino will miss three to four months after undergoing surgery to address a lower back issue. The team later said that they’ve recalled 2022 first-rounder Maveric Lamoureux from AHL Tucson, but with a full 23-man roster, there’s still a corresponding move coming.

The team didn’t disclose when each player underwent surgery. However, if Durzi underwent it within the last few days, a six-month timeline would mean his regular season is over after just four appearances. Meanwhile, Marino should return in the lead-up to or after the league’s schedule pauses for the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off. Both players are already on injured reserve, and with over $8MM in cap space, a transfer to LTIR is unlikely for either.

It’s a regrettable development for both players and the team, although it’s not unexpected. Reports from Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet and Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff indicated earlier this month that an absence of at least four months awaited Durzi. Utah head coach André Tourigny said last Friday that Marino would still be unavailable for “months.”

Durzi, who turned 26 on Monday, is in the first year of the four-year, $24MM extension he signed in June to keep him off this summer’s RFA market. Acquired by the Coyotes from the Kings in the 2023 offseason, he excelled in a top-pairing role in the desert, controlling 54.8% of shot attempts at even strength and posting 41 points (9 G, 32 A) in 76 games. Unfortunately, he’ll now miss most of his first season under that contract.

The 2018 second-round pick of the Maple Leafs has been traded twice – first from Toronto to Los Angeles in 2019’s Jake Muzzin trade and again from L.A. to Arizona in 2023. He’s now averaged 20:48 per game across 216 NHL appearances, recording 108 points with a -20 rating but a strong 51.8 CF%. Through four games this year before sustaining the injury on a hit from Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler over a week ago, he had two assists and a +2 rating.

Durzi is a left-shot but played the right side throughout much of last season in Arizona. He did so again to begin 2024-25, suiting up on the right side on Utah’s first pairing alongside offseason trade acquisition Mikhail Sergachev. With Marino also out long-term, Utah will be without its top two right defensemen for most of its inaugural season.

Marino, also a trade pickup by general manager Bill Armstrong over the summer, has yet to play a game for Utah. He sustained the back injury during offseason training and never practiced with the team during training camp. He was initially listed as week-to-week and was later upgraded to day-to-day, signaling a potential return was near, but an evident setback landed him on IR to start the regular season.

Despite their recent aggressiveness in the trade market, don’t expect Utah to swing a deal for a right-shot defenseman in the coming days. Chris Johnston of The Athletic and TSN reports they “intend to lean on internal solutions,” at least for now. One of those internal solutions is the 20-year-old Lamoureux, a hulking 6’7″ right-shot defender who’s off to a hot start with Tucson in his first professional season. The former QMJHL champion and All-Star has two goals and an assist through his first four AHL games.

Utah’s injured players were already on IR before today’s news, so they’re likely sending someone down to accommodate Lamoureux’s addition to the roster. That will be depth defender Patrik Koch, Belle Fraser of the Salt Lake Tribune reports. Utah recalled the 27-year-old last week after Durzi’s injury, but he was a healthy scratch in three straight contests. Koch, a mainstay in pro leagues in Czechia and Slovakia, jumped to North America with the Coyotes organization last season. He spent most of the year in Tucson but made his NHL debut in March, posting a shot on goal and receiving a 10-minute misconduct penalty in a game against the Wild.

Lamoureux joins Robert Bortuzzo and Michael Kesselring as the right-shot defensemen on Utah’s active roster. However, both Ian Cole and Juuso Välimäki can and have played on their off side in recent days. He could make his NHL debut tomorrow against the Avalanche.

Utah Hockey Club Recall Patrik Koch https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2024/10/utah-hockey-club-recall-patrik-koch.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2024/10/utah-hockey-club-recall-patrik-koch.html#respond Wed, 16 Oct 2024 20:26:23 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=218712 The Utah Hockey Club will have quite the hole on their defense for the foreseeable future with Sean Durzi dealing with an undisclosed injury. To fill that void, the organization has recalled defenseman Patrik Koch from their AHL affiliate, the Tucson Roadrunners.

Koch made his way to North America last season by signing a one-year, $848K deal with the Arizona Coyotes after spending much of his professional career in Czechia and Slovakia. He spent nearly the entire season with AHL Tucson scoring one goal and 15 points in 63 games while also collecting 97 PIMs.

Koch, who is from Malacky, Slovakia, was set to become an unrestricted free agent this past offseason. His strong performance at the 2024 IIHF World Championship, where he had one goal and four points, likely contributed to Utah’s decision to sign him to a one-year, $775K contract on June 20th.

He continued his solid play into training camp this September tallying three assists in two games while posting a +5 rating. Utah reassigned Koch to AHL Tucson on October 4th after clearing waivers but he’s been held scoreless after two games to start the year.

The team will likely utilize veteran defenseman Robert Bortuzzo tonight to fill in for the injured Durzi. Should he not meet expectations; however, Koch could make his debut in Utah sooner than expected.

Utah Signs Patrik Koch To One-Year Extension https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2024/06/utah-signs-patrik-koch-to-one-year-extension.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2024/06/utah-signs-patrik-koch-to-one-year-extension.html#respond Thu, 20 Jun 2024 22:21:22 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=210523 The Utah Hockey Club has signed defenseman Patrik Koch to a one-year, two-way contract extension (Twitter link). The details of the contract haven’t been released, following Utah club policy, though it’s expected to carry a league-minimum $775K cap hit, per CapFriendly.

Koch signed a one-year, $847.5K contract with the Arizona Coyotes last summer, making a move to North America after an eight-year career split between the Czechia and Slovakia Extraligas. Koch totaled 15 points and 97 penalty minutes in 63 games as an AHL rookie, continuing his trend of high-event stat lines – having surpassed 85 penalty minutes in four of his last five seasons in Europe. Koch also made his NHL debut on March 7th and, true to form, received a game misconduct for joining in on a small line brawl after just nine minutes of ice time. Koch added four hits and one block to his NHL stat line, flexing imposing physicality at the bottom of the lineup.

This extension makes Koch just the fourth defenseman signed by Utah, with the club still facing eight pending free agents at the position. That leaves a lot of uncertainty in Utah’s depth chart, though it’s unlikely that Koch will rival a daily NHL role as next season roles around. The European veteran will instead return to a young Tuscon blue-line, looking to bring the physicality needed to protect young and inexperienced players like Julian Lutz, Sam Lipkin, and Maveric Lamoureux.

West Notes: Lindholm, Maroon, Dewar, Eberle, Koch https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2024/03/west-notes-lindholm-maroon-dewar-eberle-koch.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2024/03/west-notes-lindholm-maroon-dewar-eberle-koch.html#comments Fri, 08 Mar 2024 15:27:51 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=204630 There had been some speculation that the Canucks could flip Elias Lindholm to secure assets that would be part of a Jake Guentzel trade.  However, with Guentzel now in Carolina, it appears Vancouver won’t be looking to flip Lindholm after all, reports TSN’s Chris Johnston in his latest piece for The Athletic (subscription link).  The 29-year-old hasn’t lit it up yet with his new team as he has just four goals and three assists in 16 games since coming over from Calgary, not the type of stretch run he was hoping for as he heads to UFA eligibility this summer for the first time.

More from the West:

  • The Wild have received interest in winger Pat Maroon and center Connor Dewar, reports The Athletic’s Michael Russo (subscription link). Maroon has missed the last month with a back injury that will keep him out for a couple more weeks but as a cheap gritty, experienced bottom-six forward, it’s not a surprise that there is still interest.  The pending unrestricted free agent has 16 points in 49 games so far this season.  Dewar, meanwhile, is heading for restricted free agency this summer with arbitration eligibility.  The 24-year-old has 10 goals in 57 games while averaging a little over 11 minutes a night and is a key part of Minnesota’s penalty kill.  With the rental center market being thin, the Wild could command a decent return if they decide to move Dewar as a result.
  • The Kraken and winger Jordan Eberle were discussing a two-year deal with a cap hit of $4.5MM, relays Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli. However, Eberle is believed to be seeking a third year which is the hold-up in discussions.  The 33-year-old has seen his numbers dip this season but still has 14 goals and 23 assists through 58 games.  The expectation is that Eberle will either be signed or traded by the 2 PM CT deadline.  If it’s the latter, Seattle will almost certainly need to retain on his current $5.5MM price tag.
  • The Coyotes announced (Twitter link) that they’ve assigned defenseman Patrik Koch to AHL Tucson. The 27-year-old was recalled yesterday but didn’t play.  Koch is in his first season in North America and has a goal and ten assists in 47 games with the Roadrunners so far this season.

Central Notes: Carrier, Koch, Khusnutdinov, Coyotes https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2024/03/central-notes-carrier-koch-khusnutdinov-coyotes.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2024/03/central-notes-carrier-koch-khusnutdinov-coyotes.html#respond Fri, 08 Mar 2024 01:55:05 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=204582 Earlier this morning, TSN’s Pierre LeBrun commented that everything was still on the table in regards to Nashville Predators defenseman Alexandre Carrier. Taking a mixed approach to the trade deadline, the Predators have resigned Thomas Novak, and brought in Anthony Beauvillier and Jaret Anderson-Dolan, while shipping out Yakov Trenin.

Much like they did with their other rental options this past week, the Predators are weighing the option of signing Carrier to an extension, trading him, or using him as their rental. With less than 24 hours leading up to the trade deadline, Nashville does not have the luxury of time to make their decision.

As far as his value compared to other moves that have been made already this deadline season, the Predators could conceivably command a second-round pick for Carrier’s services. In 58 games for Nashville this season, Carrier has scored four goals and 19 points, averaging just under 18 and a half minutes a night.

Other Central notes:

  • After sending veteran defenseman Troy Stecher to the Edmonton Oilers earlier today, the Arizona Coyotes opened up a roster spot on their blue line. To fill the void, the team opted to recall defenseman Patrik Koch according to a team announcement. In his first season in professional hockey in North America, Koch has only played for the Coyotes AHL affiliate, the Tucson Roadrunners, suiting up in 47 games this year, scoring 11 points overall.
  • Now over a week since the Minnesota Wild signed forward Marat Khusnutdinov to an entry-level contract, it appears the organization has found some clarity on when he will eventually make his debut with the club. Michael Russo of The Athletic is reporting that Khusnutdinov’s visa issues have been worked out with the United States, and he will join the team for practice on Saturday.
  • The Arizona Coyotes have shared that Jason Zucker and Matt Dumba will both sit out of the team’s Thursday night game for trade-related reasons. Both players have been focal pieces of Arizona’s assets this Deadline, with the team now acknowledging their chances of moving. They are both in their first season with the Coyotes, with Zucker scoring nine goals and 25 points in 51 games and Dumba totaling 10 points in 58 games. The two were previously teammates with the Minnesota Wild from 2013 to 2020, before Zucker joined the Pittsburgh Penguins for four seasons.

Arizona Coyotes Recall Patrik Koch https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2023/12/arizona-coyotes-recall-patrik-koch.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2023/12/arizona-coyotes-recall-patrik-koch.html#respond Wed, 06 Dec 2023 17:58:13 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=198559 The Arizona Coyotes have recalled defenseman Patrik Koch from their AHL affiliate, the Tucson Roadrunners.

The move puts the 26-year-old Slovak defenseman in a position to make his NHL debut, a debut that would come just a few short months removed from the start of his North American professional career. An undrafted veteran of the Czech and Slovak leagues, Koch was signed by Arizona this past summer after a solid season in Czechia.

Playing for HC Vítkovice, Koch scored 12 points in 46 games and helped the club reach the Czech semifinals. He also earned a spot on Slovakia’s team for the 2023 IIHF Men’s World Championship, where his country would only narrowly miss out on advancement to the playoffs.

So far this season Koch has played entirely in the AHL with the Roadrunners. He has most recently been listed on the team’s third pairing alongside Montana Onyebuchi, usage that does not indicate that he would be a prime call-up candidate. That being said, Koch provides quite a bit of bite and physicality, something other call-up candidates such as Victor Söderström or Maksymilian Szuber don’t offer as readily.

With the Coyotes preparing to play a tough Philadelphia Flyers squad that boasts fearsome forwards such as Nicolas Deslauriers and Garnet Hathaway, recalling Koch adds a bruising defenseman to an Arizona defense that is currently not overflowing with overwhelmingly physical players outside veteran Josh Brown.

Arizona Coyotes Sign Patrik Koch https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2023/06/arizona-coyotes-sign-patrik-koch.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2023/06/arizona-coyotes-sign-patrik-koch.html#comments Mon, 05 Jun 2023 17:56:23 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=186504 The Arizona Coyotes announced today the team has signed defenseman Patrik Koch to a one-year entry-level contract. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Koch, 26, brings a wealth of international professional experience to the Coyotes organization. In 2022-23 with HC Vítkovice in the Czech Extraliga, the Slovak defender recorded three goals and nine assists for 12 points in 46 regular season games. In the playoffs, Koch contributed two goals and two assists in 16 games while amassing 17 penalty minutes.

A physical, shutdown defenseman, Koch provided some unexpected offense for Slovakia at the 2023 Men’s World Championship. Koch notched a goal and three assists in seven games, leading all Slovak defensemen in scoring.

Coyotes general manager Bill Armstrong had this to say about the signing:

We are very pleased to have Patrik join our organization. He is a competitive, defensive defenseman with good puck moving capability and was an integral contributor to the Slovak National Team’s defense for many years. We look forward to seeing him in training camp.

Standing at 6-foot-1 and weighing 190 pounds, Koch spent the last three seasons with Vítkovice, accumulating six goals and 17 assists for 23 points in 156 career Extraliga regular-season games. Koch also played eight games with HC Kometa Brno between 2015 and 2017, where he was briefly teammates with Coyotes goaltender Karel Vejmelka.

The Coyotes have been active in terms of bringing over European free agents in recent seasons, but most of them ended up playing marginal NHL roles at best. Koch is likely destined for AHL Tucson to start the season and will need to work his way up the depth chart to make his NHL debut.
