It’s funny because I missed 10 games, but it feels like you’ve missed like 30 when you’re sitting out and everything,” Fox said, referring to when he initially sustained the injury in November of last season. “I think when people get hurt, you maybe come back and you’re tentative. I think it’s a normal reaction. I think overall, still, the year was good. Obviously, now, that’s in the past and I feel healthy now. Not too worried about any of that stuff anymore.

The re-occurrence of the injury during the Rangers’ First Round win over the Capitals did limit Fox’s effectiveness, keeping him to a rather pedestrian eight assists in 16 games. But it didn’t hamper him at all upon his return during the regular season. The 26-year-old managed the best offensive showing of his five-year NHL career, torching opponents for 56 assists and 73 points in 72 games – not career-highs, but his first time breaking the point-per-game plateau. He averaged north of 23 minutes per game and finished top five in Norris Trophy voting for the fourth year in a row.

There’s more out of the Eastern Conference:

  • The Rangers had a contender for the most memorable game of the preseason Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden, erasing a 4-1 deficit in the final 6:10 of regulation to defeat the Islanders 6-4. But it came with a price – star winger Artemi Panarin left the game in the third period with a lower-body injury and is still being evaluated, head coach Peter Laviolette said last night. There’s yet to be an update on the 32-year-old, who finished fifth in Hart Trophy voting last season after leading the Rangers in scoring with 120 points (49 G, 71 A) in 82 games. The team also lost top-four defenseman Ryan Lindgren to an upper-body injury, likely sustained in his fight with Islanders defender Scott Mayfield after the latter laid a knee-on-knee hit on Rangers center Filip Chytil. Chytil, who played just 10 games last season due to concussion symptoms, was able to return.
  • Many eyebrows were raised when the Senators signed 38-year-old winger Nikolai Kulemin to a professional tryout a few weeks ago. After all, he hasn’t played in the NHL since the 2017-18 season and spent the past six years as a serviceable but non-dominant force in the Kontinental Hockey League. Kulemin recently told Chris Johnston of TSN and The Athletic that his son, Aleks Kulemin, will play U-16 hockey with the Toronto-area Don Mills Flyers this season and wasn’t ready to part with his family or his playing career, leading him to once again pursue opportunities in North America, preferably north of the border.

Senators Sign Calen Addison, Nikolai Kulemin To PTOs https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2024/09/senators-sign-calen-addison-nikolai-kulemin-to-ptos.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2024/09/senators-sign-calen-addison-nikolai-kulemin-to-ptos.html#comments Thu, 05 Sep 2024 18:18:57 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=216038 The Senators are bringing in defenseman Calen Addison and veteran winger Nikolai Kulemin into training camp on professional tryout agreements, the team announced Thursday.

Addison, 24, will look to catch on in Ottawa after a difficult 2023-24 campaign. The right-shot defender broke into a full-time role with the Wild in 2022-23, playing minimally at even strength but posting 29 points in 62 games while logging significant time on the Minnesota power play.

Defensive concerns have always been paramount with Addison’s game, though. A second-round pick of the Penguins back in 2018, he arrived in Minnesota’s prospect pool two years later via the trade that sent Jason Zucker to Pittsburgh. In his limited usage in 2022-23, averaging 16:07 per game, he still managed to log a team-worst -17 rating.

An RFA last offseason, Addison held out for much of the summer before agreeing to a one-year, $825K deal shortly after training camp began in September. He played just 12 games for the Wild, posting five assists and a -3 rating, before he was traded to the league-worst Sharks in early November.

Even as the top offensive and power-play option on a paper-thin San Jose defense, Addison couldn’t reclaim his offensive production from the year before. He posted a more conservative 12 points in 60 games after the trade, averaging 17:21 per game and supplementing it with a -35 rating, although that figure doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb on a Sharks team that finished the season with a -150 goal differential.

Nonetheless, it wasn’t particularly surprising when the Sharks non-tendered Addison in June, letting him hit the unrestricted free-agent market three years before he’d otherwise be eligible for UFA status. With no interest in a guaranteed deal, he’ll look to land a likely league-minimum pact in camp with the Sens.

While Ottawa’s top four on defense are set to enter the season with Thomas ChabotNick JensenJake Sanderson, and Artem Zub, there will be a fair amount of competition for bottom-pairing jobs. Veteran Travis Hamonic is still under contract, and he’ll be competing with the younger Jacob Bernard-Docker and Tyler Kleven for minutes out of the gate. There’s more than enough room for Addison to squeeze himself into the conversation, especially as a much more skilled puck-mover than any member of that trio.

Meanwhile, Kulemin is an immediate contender for the most eye-popping PTO of the offseason. The 38-year-old winger was a second-round pick of the Maple Leafs back in 2006, playing in over 400 games for the club (including a 30-goal campaign in 2010-11). He then signed a four-year deal with the Islanders in free agency in 2014, recording 37 goals and 79 points in 248 games there.

But after falling to a fourth-line role amid a rash of injuries in 2017-18, the final season of his contract in New York, Kulemin opted to return to his native Russia the following summer. He’s spent the last six years in the Kontinental Hockey League playing for Metallurg Magnitogorsk and Salavat Yulaev Ufa.

Kulemin is still an effective secondary scorer in a top professional league, though, even in the final stages of his career. He had 13 goals and 25 points in 46 games for Ufa last season, finishing sixth on the team in scoring while serving as an alternate captain.

It’s a puzzling career move for Kulemin, but it appears he’s intent on getting another shot in North America. There is an outside chance he could land a fourth-line role and make the opening night roster, competing with players like Angus Crookshank and Zack MacEwen. But if he’s intent on adding to his 669 career NHL games, he’ll likely need to do it by starting with the Sens’ AHL affiliate in Belleville and working his way back up.

Nikolay Kulemin, Corban Knight Re-Sign In KHL https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2020/05/nikolay-kulemin-corban-knight-re-sign-in-khl.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2020/05/nikolay-kulemin-corban-knight-re-sign-in-khl.html#respond Fri, 01 May 2020 20:26:11 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=119989 If you were wondering if former Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Islanders forward Nikolay Kulemin would ever entertain a return to the NHL, you may have received your answer today. Kulemin signed a new two-year contract with Magnitogorsk, which will take him through his age-35 season.

Last playing in the NHL during the 2017-18 season, Kulemin’s career in North America included a 30-goal season as a member of the Maple Leafs. The two-way forward was never a star but did pile up 274 points in 669 NHL games.

Back in Russia playing for his hometown team, Kulemin has rediscovered his goal-scoring touch, tallying 28 over the last two seasons.

He was one of many players who signed new contracts in the KHL today, in their first day of free agency. Another name that will be familiar to NHL fans is Corban Knight, who signed a two-year deal with Avangard. Knight scored 40 points in his first season in the KHL after bouncing between the AHL and NHL for years. The 29-year old played 23 games for the Philadelphia Flyers in 2018-19, but took his talents overseas where he has already found more success.

Snapshots: Kulemin, Schmidt, Oil Kings https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2018/05/snapshots-kulemin-schmidt-oil-kings.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2018/05/snapshots-kulemin-schmidt-oil-kings.html#respond Mon, 28 May 2018 17:50:55 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=88360 Nikolai Kulemin’s NHL career is over for the time being, as the 31-year old has signed with Magnitogorsk in the KHL. As TSN relays, it is a multi-year deal worth around $3.2MM per season, which is actually a step down from the salary he’d been earning in the NHL. Kulemin signed a four-year $16.75MM contract with the New York Islanders in 2014, and was scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ second round pick from 2006 played just 13 games for the Islanders this season, recording three points. A one-time 30-goal scorer, Kulemin was never able to repeat that kind of success and will leave the NHL with 274 points in 669 games. There’s no guarantee his career in North America is finished for good, but it wouldn’t be surprising if we never saw him on this side of the ocean again.

  • Nate Schmidt has turned into an elite defenseman for the Vegas Golden Knights, logging huge minutes on a nightly basis and controlling the game during the playoffs. If you were a Washington Capitals fan upset when they lost him in the expansion draft, know that GM Brian MacLellan tried (and failed) to get him back right away. In Isabelle Khurshudyan and Jesse Doughtery’s latest piece for the Washington Post, Vegas GM George McPhee reveals that Washington immediately tried to reacquire the young defenseman, but that the Golden Knights valued him so highly that they made a deal impossible for the Capitals to accept. Schmidt will take on his former club in the Stanley Cup Finals starting tonight, where he’ll be asked to shut down some of the most dangerous forwards in the league.
  • The Edmonton Oil Kings have relieved head coach Steve Hamilton and assistant coach Ryan Marsh of their duties, meaning a new staff will be taking over the WHL team next season. That staff might have to be hired by a new GM too, as the team also announced that GM Randy Hansch will be joining an NHL team as an amateur scout after July 1st. The Oil Kings finished dead last in the WHL this season with a 22-42-8 record, and scored the fewest while allowing the most goals in the league. It was a disastrous year, but as we’ve seen many times at the junior level before they could be in for a quick rebuild. The team selected 15-year old Dylan Guenther first overall in the recent bantam draft, and will hope he can lead the team back to prominence in the coming years.

Nikolay Kulemin Out Six Months Following Surgery https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2017/11/nikolay-kulemin-out-six-months-following-surgery.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2017/11/nikolay-kulemin-out-six-months-following-surgery.html#respond Mon, 13 Nov 2017 17:48:02 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=79563 The New York Islanders announced today that Nikolay Kulemin has undergone surgery and will be out six months. That almost certainly means he’ll be out for the rest of the 2017-18 season, as the Islanders finish up on April 7th.

It also could very well mean an end to Kulemin’s career in New York, as the 31-year old winger is an unrestricted free agent this summer. After several years in Toronto where Kulemin once scored 30 goals in a season, the Islanders signed him and fellow ex-Maple Leaf Mikhail Grabovski in the summer of 2014. Both players would end up as disappointments for the Islanders, who jettisoned the injured Grabovski’s contract at the expansion draft this year.

In 248 games for the Islanders, Kulemin would score just 37 goals and 79 points. His $4.19MM cap hit will likely be placed on injured reserve if the team ever needs the room, and he’ll have to fight for a contract somewhere this summer. In 669 career games, he has 274 points.

Metropolitan Notes: Backstrom, Kulemin, MacDonald, Nieves https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2017/11/metropolitan-notes-backstrom-kulemin-macdonald-nieves.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2017/11/metropolitan-notes-backstrom-kulemin-macdonald-nieves.html#comments Sat, 11 Nov 2017 15:10:40 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=79439 Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom is among a handful of Washington players who haven’t produced up to their typical levels yet this season.  Through 16 games, he has 13 points but that’s still off his usual 70-point (or greater) pace.  As Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post points out, the team has been deploying Backstrom in more of a defensive role in the early going and while he is more than capable of being a strong defender, the usage has taken away some of his offensive opportunities.  Head coach Barry Trotz acknowledged that he will try to use Backstrom in more of an attacking role when Washington is at home when they will have more control over the line matchups.

More from the Metropolitan:

  • Although the Islanders didn’t provide a timeline for how long winger Nikolai Kulemin will miss when they placed him on injured reserve on Wednesday, Newsday’s Arthur Staple reports that the veteran will be out for weeks or months. The 31-year-old wasn’t off to the best of starts to begin with as he had just a goal and two assists in 13 contests and if he’s going to be out for the longer-term as a result of this upper-body issue, he’s not going to be entering the free agent market next summer with much bargaining power.
  • Flyers defenseman Andrew MacDonald is expected to resume skating sometime next week as he continues to recover from a lower-body injury, notes Dave Isaac of the Courier-Post. He has been out of the lineup since October 22nd and he was originally expected to miss four-to-six weeks so it appears that his recovery is right on schedule.  Although his contract ($5.5MM through 2019-20) is a burden on Philadelphia’s salary cap, the veteran has still played a fairly important role in the early going, averaging nearly 20 minutes of ice time per night.
  • Rangers center Boo Nieves will return to the lineup today after missing the last three games with a stomach virus, Brett Cyrgalis of the New York Post reports. The youngster has made a good impression since being recalled on October 24th as he has a trio of assists in four games while logging a regular shift on New York’s fourth line.

Salary Cap Deep Dive: New York Islanders https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2017/08/salary-cap-deep-dive-new-york-islanders.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2017/08/salary-cap-deep-dive-new-york-islanders.html#respond Sun, 27 Aug 2017 19:30:13 +0000 https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/?p=75623 Navigating the Salary Cap is probably one of the more important tasks for any general manager to have. Teams that can avert total cap chaos by walking the tightrope of inking players to deals that match their value (or compensate for future value without breaking the bank) remain successful. Those that don’t see struggles and front office changes.

PHR will look at every NHL team and give a thorough look at their cap situation heading into the 2017-18 season. This will focus more on those players who are integral parts of the roster versus those who may find themselves shuttling between the AHL and NHL. All cap figures are courtesy of CapFriendly.

New York Islanders

Current Cap Hit: $72,015,833 (under the $75MM Upper Limit)

Entry-Level Contracts

Anthony Beauvillier (Two years remaining, $894K)
D Ryan Pulock (One year remaining, $863K)
F Joshua Ho-Sang (Two years remaining, $863K)
F Mathew Barzal (Three years remaining, $863K)

Potential Bonuses

Pulock: $500K
Barzal: $400K
Beauvullier: $213K
Ho-Sang: $213K

The team had to be pleased with the first-year production from Beauvillier after he put up nine goals and 15 assists in 66 games. Granted, it could have been better, but for the former 2015 first-round pick who wasn’t even expected to make the team out of training camp last year, this was a solid start. He didn’t get off to much of a start early in the season, but by the end of the year, he put together a solid string of games along with linemates Ho-Sang and Lee. He will likely find himself on the team’s third line along with Ho-Sang to start the year.

Pulock, the team’s first-round pick in 2013, was one of the main reasons behind the offseason trade of Travis Hamonic. The talented defenseman was traded away for a first and two second-round picks with the idea of implementing Pulock into the team’s plans. Rumors are they intend to put Pulock onto the team’s power play and showcase his hard slapshot. He only played one game for New York last year and broke his foot after playing just 3:57 of ice time, but he showed off his skill with the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers, putting up 15 goals and 46 points in just 55 games.

Ho-Sang, the team’s first-round pick in 2014, only played 21 games last year for the Islanders, putting up four goals and six assists in that span. A full 82-game season should be able to demonstrate his long-term value to the franchise. Barzal still must make the team out of training camp, but is considered to be one of the top prospects in the game and should have every opportunity to win one of the center jobs, which is not a position of depth on the team. Barzal did see two games for the Islanders last year, but played most of the year for his junior team.

One Year Remaining, Non-Entry-Level

F John Tavares ($5.5MM, UFA)
G Jaroslav Halak ($4.5MM, UFA)
F Nikolai Kulemin ($4.19MM, UFA)
F Josh Bailey ($3.3MM, UFA)
D Calvin de Haan ($3.3MM, UFA)
F Brock Nelson ($2.5MM, RFA)
F Jason Chimera ($2.25MM, UFA)
D Thomas Hickey ($2.2MM, UFA)
D Dennis Seidenberg ($1.25MM, UFA)
F Shane Prince ($850K, RFA)
F Stephen Gionta ($650K, UFA)
D Scott Mayfield ($625K, RFA)
F Alan Quine ($613K, RFA)

Obviously, the team’s future seems to hinge on where Tavares’ contract situation ends up. The team has high hopes they can re-sign their star forward, who has scored 235 goals for the franchise over eight season and is just about to turn 27 years old. The team that has watched several of their top players walk away in past years need to lock him up or, at the very least, trade him off for some talent in return. Losing Tavares would likely set the team back significantly and could play a role on whether some of the other pending free agents will come back next year.

The team will be forced to decide what they want to do with some of their regulars, including Bailey, de Haan and Hickey. Bailey, a first-round pick from 2008, has been around for nine years and while he consistently averages between 10 and 15 goals, he hit a personal high in assists last season, picking up 43 to put together a big season while playing with Tavares on the first line. With the addition of Eberle who is expected to play with Tavares, the team will likely demote Bailey to the second or even possibly the third line, which could suggest the team may not mind if he moves on in one year.

De Haan has proven to be a solid top-four presence on the blueline, but after signing a one-year deal this offseason, setting up unrestricted free agency next year, the team may decide to move on from him at some point, while Hickey hasn’t worked his way into the team’s top four. So it may be that many of the pending free agents will be allowed to leave to free up cap space, including Kulemin, Chimera and Seidenberg, along with some of the others above. That could free up a lot of cap room.

The team also will likely allow Halak to walk unless the veteran goaltender can produce a bounce-back season. After a couple of respectable seasons for New York, the 32-year-old’s production took a hit as he posted a 2.80 GAA in 27 games and then was demoted to finish the season in the AHL. He is back, but no one is quite sure what to expect for the veteran.

Perhaps the most important free agent (besides Tavares) will end up being from restricted free agent Brock Nelson, who should be asking for a big raise after three 20-goal seasons. Their 2010 first-round pick had 20 goals and 25 assists for the team last year, a career-high.

Garrioch’s Latest: Coaches, Pouliot, Islanders, Canadiens, Hayes https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2016/12/garriochs-islanders-canadiens.html https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2016/12/garriochs-islanders-canadiens.html#respond Mon, 05 Dec 2016 03:00:57 +0000 https://phr.traderumors.com/?p=59895 With Gerard Gallant being the first coach fired, talk has quickly swirled to who may the next to go.  Ottawa Sun columnist Bruce Garrioch reports in his latest Insider Trading column that several executives around the league believe that Winnipeg head coach Paul Maurice and Buffalo bench boss Dan Bylsma are both on the hot seat.  The suggestion is that the Jets have played well enough that they should be firmly in a playoff spot instead of fighting for a Wild Card berth while the Sabres have underachieved even after factoring in the long list of injuries they’ve had to deal with.

Garrioch also provided some information about several players that are available on the trade market and what some teams are looking to acquire:

  • The Edmonton Oilers have held trade talks with a few teams regarding left winger Benoit Pouliot. He’s off to a slow start this season with just four goals and one assist in 23 games while also spending time as a healthy scratch.  The 30 year old has two years left after this with a cap hit and salary of $4MM.  Garrioch clarifies that GM Peter Chiarelli isn’t actively shopping Pouliot but he is trying to see if there is any interest in him throughout the league.
  • Islanders GM Garth Snow is looking for a top line winger to play alongside John Tavares. Long-time linemate Kyle Okposo signed in Buffalo back in July while Andrew Ladd has struggled considerably with New York so far.  Even though Tavares won’t be a free agent until July of 2018, Snow is aware that finding him another winger that he’s comfortable with would go a long way towards helping them re-sign him.  One winger who doesn’t appear to be the solution is Nikolay Kulemin, who the Islanders are actively shopping.
  • Philadelphia would like to trade defenseman Andrew MacDonald. However, with a cap hit of $5MM through 2019-20, that is a move that will be much easier said than done.  The 30 year old cleared waivers last season and almost undoubtedly would again if they tried to clear his contract through that route.
  • Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin has been calling teams looking for a defenseman that could play alongside Shea Weber on their top pairing. Alexei Emelin is currently forming the other half of that duo but he’s better suited as a bottom pairing player.  Speculatively, the team would likely be looking for more of a mobile puck mover to go along with the physical Weber.
  • Boston “wouldn’t mind moving” right winger Jimmy Hayes. He has had a disastrous start to this season, scoring just a single goal in 22 games and is playing just over ten minutes per night, not exactly what they were hoping for when they dealt Reilly Smith for him back in July of 2015.  Hayes has a cap hit of $2.3MM through 2017-18 which may present some challenges to move considering his current struggles.
